#134: Can Groww help Indian Investor Wealth Grow?

Dear AJVC Reader,

Instead of Leo the Lion's roar, you might be able to hear Bezos' chuckle - only if you listen hard. The legendary Metro Goldwyn Mayer is now under the Amazon umbrella.

Feel like unwinding after stepping down from the helm? No problem, just buy the whole damn studio!

Speaking about unwinding, cryptos suffered another hammering after China called for a renewed crackdown on mining and trading activities.

Buy the dip? (Haters say, only from Domino's)

As you get reminded of food, you should be happy to see that your Facebook / Instagram is still working. At least you can post your photos from that vacation you had taken in the EU, with #majormissing. If you're vaccinated, you might as well be able to visit! EU is contemplating opening up for vaccinated non-EU tourists.

Wondering how you could manage such an expensive trip? By planning in advance and growing your savings through investments. Where to start? No better place, than at one of the latest unicorns.

Groww.
The Story
Can Groww help Indian Investor Wealth Grow?

Lalit Keshre, Harsh Jain, Neeraj Singh and Ishan Bansal had one thing in common - a desire to solve a problem faced by millions. Side note, they were also a part of the Flipkart mafia.

The problem? Wealth management for the millennials. Groww was registered in 2016 in an effort to solve this.

But fintech space by then was overcrowded. Gaining trust would prove to be harder, especially among the risk-averse Indians looking to grow their hard-earned savings.

It took a year to launch Groww's first product. The landscape by then, had started gaining strong undercurrents to go online.

Demonetisation had wiped out cash, Jiofication had brought the internet to the masses and Groww could piggyback on 'Mutual funds sahi hai' campaign. Riding on these, Groww raised its seed in 2018.

There was no going back from there. By 2019, it had 2.5MM users, and a $21.5MM Series B. While Covid broke the back of many businesses, it opened the floodgates to Groww's success. Record number of retail investors flocked to the equity market, and Groww was waiting to become a unicorn.

From being the new unsure kid on the block, to gobbling up one of the established players in the market, Groww has grown up. Will it be able to sustain its upward tick?

I started this newsletter to bridge the whitespace on conversations in the Indian startup ecosystem. The newsletter is part of a collective effort for A Junior VC platform and is curated by a lovely team.

I'm just of the opinion that retirement is scary.
