Happy Memorial Weekend! We are experiencing "in-between" weather at the moment, but I can smell the sun coming out soon.

June is "Caribbean Read" month and I'll be introducing you to Caribbean writers, books, drinks, and what should be on your summer reading list.

In the meantime, enjoy my interview with the lovely Monica West.

Our Feature Writer: Monica West

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Monica spent her early years reading everything that she could. Early in elementary school, she started writing stories and never stopped. Her love for reading and writing drove her to get her B.A. in English Literature from Duke University and her M.A. in English and American Literature from New York University.

She received her MFA in Fiction from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop where she was a Rona Jaffe Graduate Fellow. She has also received a fellowship from Kimbilio Fiction and a residency from Hedgebrook. She currently lives in Oakland, California where she is reading everything that she can get her hands on, teaching high school English, and writing another novel.

Revival Season is her first novel.

WATCH THE INTERVIEW!
ALERT: Published Book Review
"The Other Black Girl is about many things—friendship, the humdrum office culture—but its driving pulse is a sharp critique of the publishing industry’s lack of diversity. Wagner Books is a microcosm of the industry: according to a survey conducted by Lee & Low Books on diversity in the publishing industry released in January 2020, “seventy-six percent of publishing staff, review journal staff, and literary agents are White.” Harris, who worked in publishing before writing this novel, is telling the industry to pull down their blinders."

At 95-years old, Lucy is my oldest friend and the oldest book lover I know. ⁣

She is an only child and she found a home and comfort in books. She does the cutest thing, after reading a book, she writes down a little book review in her notebook. She has three notebooks filled with book reviews. ⁣

She lives near my job, so I often have lunch with her. I bring her books and salads. She loves both. She's my waterfall in a hectic workweek. ⁣

She's always dressed up - hair did, make-up did, clothes on point. Two fingers and a snap! ⁣

The best part of being a book lover - your friends come in all ages, sizes, races, classes, and religions.
