Principal's Message

Good Morning McGaugh Families,

Before the pandemic, The National Education Association (NEA) published a training manual titled The Power of Family School-Community Partnerships. The research in this publication emphasizes the benefits of parent, family, and community involvement in education and correlates family involvement with student achievement and school success. The McGaugh Elementary School community is an excellent example of this research in practice.

This school year has been quite an adventure. Thank you for your partnership. As a community, you’ve championed every effort, and you’ve supported every step! A BIG shout out of appreciation for McGaugh’s PTA. Last week’s Staff Appreciation Week was so amazing! On behalf of the faculty and staff here at McGaugh, thank you!

As we move into the final days of the 2020-21 school year, we will look forward to the continued partnership, particularly regarding 5th-grade activities and promotion. I am anticipating each event with a lot of excitement!

Here are a few things to keep in mind this week:

  • Wednesday, June 2, 2021 | A&B Cohorts (all grade levels) on campus
  • Thursday, June 3, 2021 | Final PTA Meeting  - ON Campus!
  • Tuesday, June 8, 2021 | Fifth Grade Promotion
  • Friday, June 11, 2021 | Last Day of School

That's all for now.

Rah, McGaugh!

Exciting News!!!  Last McGaugh PTA Meeting of 2020-21 will be IN-PERSON!!

Please join us Thursday, June 3rd at 8:15am for our last PTA meeting of the year
inside the McGaugh Auditorium. This is such exciting news as we will actually get to see each other in-person and celebrate all of our accomplishments as a group.  For all new families who have not seen inside our auditorium or who have only met their PTA team on zoom, we cannot wait to meet you.  For all McGaugh veterans, please join us as we’ve missed you. This will be a quick meeting where we will celebrate our accomplishments and discuss the PTA’s gift back to the school.  Please be sure to fill out this Event Form in advance of the meeting.  We have been asked by the District to have all attendees complete the form before entering. Thanks in advance.

Staff Appreciation Week (SAW) Was a Hit!!

Please join me in THANKING Jessica Kouzoukas, our 4th VP on the PTA Executive Board for her exemplary volunteerism as she pulled off a fabulous week of spreading joy to our wonderful McGaugh staff.  The week-long recognition was topped off with a delicious luncheon hosted by Simmzy’s Huntington Beach.  A special shout out to Jennifer Katz who supported Jessica and will replace Jessica next year on the PTA Executive Board.  Welcome Jennifer and we will sorely miss you Jessica!

Imagination Machine Movie is Here!

The Imagination Machine is a wonderful assembly that has been a staple at McGaugh for years.  Students work on a creative writing piece in their classrooms and we collect them and send them off to the team at The Imagination Machine. After reading through all of the stories, they select a story or two from each grade level and bring them to life on stage (typically inside the auditorium). This year, due to Covid-19 restrictions, they filmed a special performance for us bringing 8 special stories to life. Below is the list of this year's selections and the link to watch the performance. Enjoy!

  • Teegan Garland: The Magic Bow
  • Emmylou Kennedy: Wasn't Me
  • Mrs. Alvarado's 3rd, 4th & 5th Grade Class: The Dragon Lost His Memory
  • Billy Aho: Surf Boy
  • Reagan Reynolds: The Unhappy Dog Who Got Happy
  • Avery Steinberg: Making People Laugh
  • Grace Garcia: The Muffin Said...
  • Mrs. Aniceto & Mrs. Ramos Kindergarten Class: The Treasure Hunt

Attention McGaugh Families – Pavilions & McGaugh PTA have partnered up!

Seal Beach Pavilions has graciously offered to do a donation drive of sanitizer wipes for our school. This couldn’t have come at a better time as we have doubled our student count on Wednesdays with both cohorts attending school at the same time. Also, we should have plenty left to support a healthy, sanitized classroom going into next school year. So, next time you are in Pavilions, make sure to donate a wipe or two in honor of McGaugh!

International Culture Club (ICC): Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month & Summer Book Club! 🌼📚

May is Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month! In celebration of the far-reaching history & impact of the AAPI community, the McGaugh ICC will highlight an influential Asian American or Pacific Islander in America each week. This week we are highlighting chef, restaurateur and author Joyce Chen!  Before there was Food Network, Joyce Chen was credited with popularizing authentic, northern-style Chinese cuisine in the U.S. Born in Beijing, China, in 1917, Joyce Chen  was the youngest of nine children of a high-ranking Qing Dynasty official. Chen and husband Thomas with their children Henry and Helen left Shanghai (and China for the last time) on April 6, 1949 as the Communists were taking over the country. The family was on the second-to-last boat to leave Shanghai before the port closed. On April 21, Chen and her family settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She then opened the first Joyce Chen Restaurant in 1958, pioneering the all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet concept.  Joyce Chen is credited with popularizing northern-style Chinese cuisine in the United States, coining the name "Peking Raviolis" for potstickers, inventing and holding a design patent for a flat bottom wok with handle (also known as a stir fry pan), and developing the first line of bottled Chinese stir fry sauces for the US market,. Sadly, she died on August 23, 1994 at the age of 76. Posthumously in 2014, the U.S. Postal Service issued a stamp with Chen’s image in honor of her accomplishments and lasting influence on American cuisine. According to the Postal Service, "Joyce Chen is one of America's most well-known promoters of Chinese food. From her landmark restaurant in the Boston area to her cookbooks and trailblazing PBS television show, Chen invited newcomers to sample unfamiliar dishes in ways that firmly established Chinese cuisine in the United States." So the next time you enjoy peking duck or potstickers, you can thank the beloved Joyce Chen! Continue learning more about the amazing chef & author Joyce Chen HERE. 🍽
