First online European heifer auction
In May, 131 recently calved heifers and 17 stud bulls were successfully sold via a live stream. The animals were filmed at the auction site in Germany and potential buyers could bid and buy the animals from their screen. The average price was 1,868 Euro for heifers and 1,822 Euro for bulls.
A video auction is mainly organized for high-quality breeding cattle. These days such auctions are now and then organized for beef cattle as well, however it had never been done yet for utility animals. The measures surrounding Covid-19 made the organizers think creative and so they tried this online auction, which bears repeating.

In two years' time no more livestock transport by sea from New Zealand
The New Zealand Department of Agriculture has imposed a ban on the transport of live cattle by sea. The ban will take effect in two years, so that there is time to gradually stop trading, Radio New Zealand reports. Transport by air is still possible.
In 2020, more than 100,000 head of breeding stock were shipped to China, worth more than $ 255 million. Therefore the reason for the ban is not economic, but based on animal welfare. According to the ministry, the welfare of the animals at sea can no longer be controled. In September 2020, a ship sank in the Chinese sea containing 6,000 head of cattle. David Hayman, spokesperson for the exporters' association the “Animal Genetics Trade Association”, said the decision was ill-considered. For, the livestock that is transported is surplus in New Zealand, but in China can be used as valuable breeding stock. According to Hayman, the 150,000 surplus calves will now have to be slaughtered instead of sold, which is a major loss of income for many farmers.

Organic farms have almost 70% less nitrogen losses
The total nitrogen losses on organic dairy farms are about 70% lower than on conventional dairy farms. This became clear from research by Wageningen UR into ammonia emissions and nitrate leaching.
The lower losses are partly due to the fact that the cows on organic farms graze more. In pastures, urine and manure end up in different places, but in the barn it comes together in the manure cellar. Also the lower production, the non-use of fertilizers and the lower protein content in the ration ensure a more efficient use of nitrogen. Therefore, the large-scale conversion of conventional dairy farms to organic farms could make a substantial contribution to reducing the total ammonia emissions in the Netherlands, the researchers conclude.

Less milk production in the Netherlands
In 2021, the Dutch dairy cows produced less milk than the year before. The decrease from January up to and including March was about 1.3 percent, according to figures from ZuivelNL.
Throughout the European Union, production fell by 0.4%. Milk production in the other globally important dairy exporting countries showed a significant increase in February (including correction for the leap day), ZuivelNL writes. The growth in New Zealand (+ 7%) was particularly striking. Argentina (+ 6%) and Uruguay (+ 9%) also recorded a significant increase. The US (+ 2%) and Australia (+ 3%) realized a slightly less strong growth.

De Witboom Nelly 483: 93 points and 100,000 kg of milk
With an average of 37 kg of milk per day, De Witboom Nelly 483 reached the total of 100,000 kg of milk at the beginning of April 2021. Actually nothing special, because in the Netherlands three cows pass this milestone every day. However, Nelly also combines this with 93 points for type.
"Nelly is a cow after our hearts," says Kees Versluis from Ameide. "She started calmly as a 2-year-old and got 87 points, but she gets better every year." As a third calver she became excellent. As a fourth calver she received 92 points. And last summer she was registered with 93 points and received the designation Star Cow 1. "We are breeding strongly for dairyness. For us, Nelly is an exemplary cow in this area. It is not without reason that she received the unique score of 96 points for dairyness," according to Versluis.
In six lactations, the Watha daughter gave this amount of milk in 2650 days, with an average of 4.41% fat and 3.49% protein. She has been in milk for a year now and is still producing 30 liters a day. Her mother, a daughter by Marconi, also passed the milestone of 100,000 kg of milk. Their hope is that she will also achieve the 10,000 kg of fat and protein. "That is a nice dream of course," says Kees. "However, we are looking at live animals here, no guarantees."
