June Newsletter
Accelerating the translation of Research findings into Action to ensure scientific evidence can positively Impact the health of South Australians.

During the month of May we were fortunate to hold our first Stakeholder and Community Forum for the year. Over 40 people, representing 25 organisations, came together to find out how HTSA's helping to delivering rapid, impactful health research in South Australia and provide input into our draft strategic plan which will set our work priorities for the next three years.

It was an inspiring morning, that provided an opportunity for HTSA staff, stakeholder representatives and community members present to consider engagement opportunities in the future.

In line with our future strategic priorities, HTSA has recently submitted a collaborative HeSANDA Infrastructure Development Registration of Interest - bringing together the 3 SA universities, SAHMRI, SA Health including the Local Health Networks and the Commission on Excellence and Innovation in Health - with the objective of developing a national data infrastructure for health research data sharing and collaboration. The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) is seeking to improve health research data sharing with appropriate ethical agreement using the FAIR principles. The aim for this work is to start initially with “clinical trials”, then move to registries and clinical data.

In other news, I was pleased to hear this week that 4 South Australian's were successful in receiving the Australian Health Research Alliance Women's Health Research and Translation Network (the Network) - Early and Mid‐Career Researcher Funded Award. This Award is for 1 year, commencing 1 July 2021, which provides one‐off financial support of up to $15,000 for career development and advancement activities. This is timely as we welcome Cadence Haynes in early June to our team, working two days per week, to drive establishment of the Network within South Australia. We will be reaching out to South Australians involved in women's health research very soon!

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank and farewell Agustina Gancia (Senior Project Officer, Community Engagement), who is taking a years maternity leave, and Lan Kelly (Health Analytics Research Collaborative Data Fellow), who will be replaced by Joey Gerlach.

We welcome Cadence and Joey to the team!

Consultation and collaboration are powering game-changing ROSA research that is lifting the standard of care for older Australians

A national first when it was first established in 2017, the flagship Health Translation SA program Registry of Senior Australians (ROSA), provided critical information and research to the recent landmark Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety and continues to play a key role in the national assessment of the quality of aged care services Australians receive.

The unique ROSA database allows researchers for the first time, to track how older Australians navigate aged care and healthcare systems and how the care they receive has affected their health and wellbeing.

The ROSA research team, based at SAHMRI, and supported by Health Translation SA and the South Australian government through the Department of Innovation and Skills, are continuously consulting with consumers, clinicians, aged care providers and peak bodies to guide their important research.

Associate Director at ROSA, Adjunct Associate Professor Gillian Caughey says the ROSA is positively impacting some of the most vulnerable people in our community by keeping their needs front and centre in all research projects and community consultations.

A coming together of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health researchers

As announced as part of the 2021-22 Budget, the National Network of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health researchers has been established and will bring together unique skills across culture, knowledge and health research to address the health priorities of Indigenous communities.

Among Australia’s eminent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers to lead the new National Network are: Dr Pat Anderson AO (The Lowitja Institute), Professor Alex Brown (SAHMRI), Professor Sandra Eades (Curtin University) and Professor Gail Garvey (Menzies School of Health Research).

The NHMRC National Network has been established with $10 million funding from the Australian Government as a major new initiative in NHMRC’s 10-year strategy to improve the health of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population (Road Map 3).

Have you engaged a community member via our Community Interest Register? - We want your feedback!

Our Community Interest Register has continued to gain membership and researcher interest as community engagement in health and medical research becomes more mainstream.

Over the past 2 years, 100 community members have registered their interest in contributing to the research conducted in South Australia, and many have gone on to be formally engaged in reviewing grants, co-designing projects and contributing as advisors on committees. Interest among researchers has also significantly increased during this period, with over 40 research teams seeking to recruit consumers and community members.

We are reaching out to any research groups who have requested recruitment support from our Community Interest Register between 2019 and 2021. We kindly request that you complete the survey below to help us better understand if the recruitment process fulfills the needs of the researcher community and how this might be improved.

The survey takes about 5 minutes to complete.

For any questions or comments about the survey or the Community Interest Register, or if you would like support with another project, please write to community@sahmri.com.

The survey will close on Friday, 11 June 2021.
