County Hits Key COVID-19 Vaccine Metrics and Moves to Next Phase of Reopening; All County Restrictions Will End on May 28

On Friday, May 28, most restrictions that have been in place for safety reasons will be lifted. The County Council, acting as the Board of Health and in consultation with County health officials and County Executive Marc Elrich, approved moving to the new reopening phases.

COVID-19 Information Portal Has Statistics on the Virus Including Infections and Vaccinations Given by Zip Codes   

Montgomery County’s COVID-19 Information Portal provides a variety of breakdowns on how the virus has impacted the County. The statistics are updated to reflect the most recent reports during the health crisis. Among the information available is how many positive cases have been reported in each zip code in the County and how many vaccinations have been given by zip code.

More Financial Relief Available for County Restaurants Impacted by Health Crisis

Montgomery County restaurants impacted by the COVID-19 health crisis may be eligible for financial relief grants through an additional $3.8 million in funding that is now available. In this third round of restaurant relief, the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) will award grants of up to $10,000 to eligible restaurants and food establishments.

Regulations Continue to Require Face Coverings on Public Transportation—Including Taxis, Ride Sharing, Ride On, Ride On Extra and Flash Bus

Registration is now open for Montgomery County Recreation (MCR) and Montgomery Parks summer programs and classes. Programs and activities are tailored to a variety of interests, skill levels and ages. MCR summer offerings include aquatics, adult 55+ programming, fitness, sports, visual and performing arts.

Updated COVID-19 Guidelines Go into Effect on Friday, May 28

Montgomery County’s progress in getting residents to receive COVID-19 vaccines will put new guidelines into effect starting at 6 a.m. on Friday, May 28. The new guidelines will be implemented as a result of agreements made between the County Council and County Executive Marc Elrich, based on consultations with County health officials.

COVID-19 Update: Daily Cases Continue Downward Trend as More than 61 Percent of County Residents Have Received At Least One Dose of Vaccine

Daily new cases and hospitalizations for COVID-19 continued a downward trend in Montgomery County as more than 650,000 County residents (61.9 percent of the overall population) have received at least one dose of vaccine according to State statistics released on Thursday, May 27. More than 539,000 (51.3 percent) are fully vaccinated.

Eight Montgomery County Public Libraries will reopen on Monday, June 14. Together with the six branches that have already reopened, that will bring the total number of libraries reopened to 14.

New Episode of ‘What’s Happening MoCo’ Podcast Focuses on the County’s Reopening After 440 days of COVID Restrictions

As Montgomery County warms up to encouraging vaccination numbers and its lowest COVID-19 positivity statistics since the health crisis began, the latest episode of the “What’s Happening MoCo” podcast introduces the redefinition of the “new normal.” Jerome Fletcher, one of the County’s assistant chief administrative officers, will provide details of the updated County restrictions starting Friday, May 28, and the continuation of economic recovery efforts. Disability and Human Rights Advocate Haben Girma to Join the ‘Contemporary Conversations’ Series at Montgomery County Public Libraries

Haben Girma, recipient of the Helen Keller Achievement Award for her tireless advocacy for people with disabilities, will participate in Montgomery County Public Libraries’ (MCPL) virtual “Contemporary Conversations” series at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 5. She will discuss “Conquering Harvard Law and Becoming a Disability and Human Rights Advocate.”

As residents take on spring cleaning, the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is reminding everyone to be mindful of what they throw into the trash as certain items can cause trash fires.

Montgomery County Recreation is excited to welcome the 55+ community back to senior centers for programs, classes, work outs and much more!

Damascus Senior Center and Holiday Park Senior Center will open their doors for a grand re-opening on Monday, June 14. A variety of programs and activities will be available for pre-registration as will drop-in activities such as the weight room, library, and pool tables. 

North Potomac, Schweinhaut, Wheaton and White Oak Senior Centers will open one-two days a week. Though Long Branch Senior Center’s re-opening is delayed a bit, 55+ programming will take place on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, in the grassy area outside the MCR Long Branch Pool (weather permitting).

Curbside transportation is available for any resident 55 and older who resides within the centers’ service area (approximately 3 to 5-mile radius). Transportation will be offered five days a week for our Holiday Park and Damascus locations. All other locations will have modified transportation. Long Branch or Schweinhaut participants may request transportation to nearby Holiday Park.

Are you at least 60 years old and want to join our onsite lunch program?  Call one of our recreation staff members to apply.  (A spouse of a qualifying participant, or an adult with a disability, may be eligible.)

Want even more summer adventure?  55+ Adult Summer Camps are coming this July!  “Seniors On-the-Go” one-week camps will take place at White Oak, Holiday Park and Damascus Senior Centers.

Seniors Ride Free Extends to All Hours of Operation
Montgomery County Council approved changes to bus service for older adults. Fares will now be free at all times on Ride On and Metrobus in the County. (Ride On fares will be free for all ages due to COVID until June 30, 2021).

Montgomery Parks Now Accepting Applications for Permits to Use Park Buildings, Picnic Shelters

Montgomery Parks is now accepting permit applications to reserve park activity buildings and picnic shelters at local parks for nominal fees. The amenities will be available beginning on June 12.

As Economic Recovery Continues, Maryland to Discontinue Enhanced Pandemic Unemployment Benefits

Governor Larry Hogan has announced that the State of Maryland will discontinue enhanced pandemic Federal unemployment benefits and reinstate work search requirements early next month. However, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said he disagrees with the decision.

‘Bringing Women Back to Work’ Will Be Theme as Montgomery County Hosts Revitalization and Recovery Virtual Town Hall on Friday, June 11

“Bringing Women Back to Work” will be the theme from noon-1 p.m. on Friday, June 11, when Montgomery County’s COVID-19 Economic Revitalization and Recovery program continues its series of virtual town hall meetings to keep businesses informed on strategies for doing business as the County turns the corner toward recovery.

County Department of Environmental Protection Announces a Video Challenge to Celebrate Chesapeake Bay Awareness Week

Chesapeake Bay Awareness Week is taking place from June 5 to 13. In joining this year’s celebration, the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is challenging all residents to create a video to show support and enthusiasm for clean water and the beauty of the Bay. Residents are being challenged to create a video on Instagram or TikTok based on a daily theme.

24th Juneteenth Celebration Will Feature Music, Artistic Performances, Educational Activities and the African American Living Legend Awards on Saturday, June 19

Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security Offers Tips to Prepare for the Summer Storm Season

The Atlantic Hurricane and Summer Storm Season officially began on June 1 and will run through November. Montgomery County’s Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (OEMHS) is joining the Maryland Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service (NWS) in urging community members to familiarize themselves with what to do before, during and after a severe storm.

Olney Resident Reflects on His Family’s Special Connection with ‘Juneteenth’ on the Latest Episode of ‘What’s Happening MoCo’ Podcast

Reynauld Smith, an Olney resident and board member of the Sandy Spring Slave Museum, shares the experiences of his ancestors’ emancipation from slavery on June 19, 1865, on the latest episode of Montgomery County’s “What’s Happening MoCo” podcast. The date is now known nationally as “Juneteenth.”

The retail stores of Montgomery County’s Department of Alcohol Beverage Services will return to normal hours of operation starting Sunday, June 13. The new schedule includes expanded hours and the reopening of stores on Sundays.

School All-Purpose Rooms, Cafeterias and Gyms Will Again Be Available for Public Use on Weekends in Summer; Reservation Requests Can Be Filed Starting Friday, June 11

All-purpose rooms, cafeterias and gyms in many Montgomery County Public Schools will again be available for public use on weekends from June 20 through Aug. 15. Reservations can be booked starting Friday, June 11.

Survey on County’s Draft Vision Zero 2030 Action Plan Will Close on Monday, June 21

A survey seeking public input on Montgomery County’s Draft Vision Zero 2030 Action Plan and Fiscal Years 2022-23 Work Plan will close on Monday, June 21. The survey has been open since April when County Executive Marc Elrich released the draft of the plan. It builds on the County’s previous Vision Zero and Pedestrian Safety plans and lays out the work ahead to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries by 2030.

Ride On Flex On-Demand Service to Return to Operations on July 19

Ride On Flex, a unique on-demand transit service that was piloted in 2019 into early 2020, but has been suspended due to the COVID-19 health crisis, will be returned to operation by the Montgomery County Department of Transportation’s (MCDOT) on Monday, July 19. Flex operates in defined zones in Rockville and Glenmont/Wheaton.

DPS Announcements
Montgomery County’s Department of Permitting Services (DPS) will be welcoming walk-in customers to its new offices at 2425 Reedie Dr. in Wheaton starting on Monday, June 14. 

DPS offices will operate from 7:30 a.m.- 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

DPS offices were previously located in Downtown Rockville.  The relocation to the new 14-story office building that is part of the Wheaton Revitalization Project and part of the County’s efforts to consolidate many of its departments into a single location. However, the new building was dedicated in October during the COVID-19 health crisis when most County facilities were closed for safety reasons.

The new DPS offices are on the seventh floor of the new building. 

“In response to the pandemic, the Department of Permitting Services transitioned quickly and efficiently from in-person to online services,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “I want to thank Director Mitra Pedoeem and all of the employees at DPS, as well as our residents and businesses, for their adaptation and patience to our online permitting process. As we move back to in-person services, I am confident that the resilience and innovation that DPS displayed over the past year will help enhance the level of customer service the department provides to residents and businesses for years to come.”

License & Permits Extensions end June 30, 2021

The Governor has ordered that the extensions for certain professional licenses, permits, registrations authorized by the State of Maryland, any agency of the Sate of Maryland , or any political subdivision of the State of Maryland will expire on June 30, 2021. 

Please renew any licenses or permits that have been extended due the Governor's order before June 30 to ensure proper processing.

New Impact Taxes Effective July 1, 2021

Council has approved impact taxes that go into effect on July, 1, 2021.  Check the DPS website for more information.
