RIVER WORK PARTIES

for June

Dear <<First Name>>,

The Magic number is now 30!

We are still operating in line with the latest guidance and take appropriate precautions to make sure we minimise any risk and keep our volunteers safe but Government Covid-19 guidelines have now changed to allow extra volunteers to come out together for work parties - It’s still a numbers game but the magic number has now gone up to 30! This means there are extra places available so if you’ve been hesitating, now’s the time to dust off your work gloves and come and join us . . .

Hope to see you soon

Best wishes,
Jenni
Volunteer Coordinator

Great British Spring Clean

We’re going the extra mile for the

Great British Spring Clean

with
twinned events in Carlisle right at the beginning of June

1. Litterpick

Alongside the Caldew in Carlisle - behind Sainsbury's, under the railway and around the sports field

Thursday 3 June May, 10am - 1pm

Easy access. Suitable for everyone

You will need:
  • Gloves, sturdy shoes or boots and suitable clothes for the start of the Cumbrian summer! Please make sure you have long sleeves and trousers as the vegetation at the side of the paths includes nettles and thistles.
  • Please also bring your own refreshments to help you last until the end of the session.
Litter pickers, bags and other equipment will be provided.

2. Cleaning up on the riverside footpaths

Litter-picking and balsam pulling along the lanes behind Sainsbury’s & down to Hadrian’s Wall path by the River Eden,

Saturday 5th June, 10am - 1pm

More of a grot spot – overgrown vegetation, lots of litter and thick stands of Himalayan balsam along the banks – Boy does this need a spring clean!

Everyone welcome but please be aware that the paths can be slippery when wet and extra care will be needed by the becks

Come and help reclaim a section of the footpath network so everyone can get down to the Eden safely.

Barnskew site day
footpath restoration group

Maulds Meaburn

Thursday 10 June, 10am - 3pm

We will be working round the permissive footpath, cutting grass, trimming overhanging vegetation and  freeing up some of the trees from the confines of the tree guards and encroaching grass.

There will be an introductory / refresher session with our Austrian scythes before we start on the harder task of tackling the footpath itself.

No experience needed but numbers are limited and priority will be given to volunteers who are interested in a regular commitment to working on this site.

Book in on volunteers@edenrt.org or phone Jenni on 07834 555185

Himalayan Balsam Bashing

After an exceptionally cold spring, Himalayan balsam has emerged slowly and until now has been mostly too small for group bashing sessions. It is however good to catch it as soon as we can, before it flowers and sets seed, and we also need to check for re-emergence on some of the sites we did last year.

Wednesday 16 June, 10am - 3pm
Dufton, Appleby
Track and bash

Retrace our summer of 2020 balsam bashing journey along the river through Dufton Ghyll looking for any plants that remain

No special equipment or experience needed but there will be a lot of walking over uneven ground and we might have to cross the river.

Please bring:
  • Gloves, wellies and suitable outdoor clothes
  • Your own drinks, snacks and lunch.
Book on volunteers@edenrt.org

Thursday 24th June, 10am - 3pm
Brampton area

Open to everyone. No special equipment or experience needed

Please bring:
  • Gloves, sturdy shoes or boots and suitable outdoor clothes
  • Your own drinks, snacks and lunch
