NAB in the community


Highlights of the activities our National Advisory Board (NAB) and IIN team have been involved in over the last month.

The Philanthropy New Zealand Summit

Philanthropy New Zealand hosted their biennial Summit in May 2021. This conference is the largest gathering of the philanthropy sector in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Our NAB members, past and present, contributed to the Summit's programme. We share some of their key takeaways from the Summit that informs the contribution of philanthropy to the future of impact investing

GSG Global Leadership Meeting 

David Woods and Tan Huynh attended the GSG's (Global Steering Group for Impact Investment) Global Leadership Meeting (GLM). This annual conference (virtual) was attended by around 100 attendees from 44 NABs around the world to share knowledge on global impact investing trends and practices. IIN breakfast takeaways

 
There was good attendance and discussion at the Impact Investing Network (IIN) breakfast event on 1 June 2021. An insightful start to the day before the Responsible Investment Association Australasia (RIAA) conference.

Here is a summary of key takeaways from the breakfast event, read more.

Coming out of the event, the NAB will lead a process to produce one or more position papers, which could include definition of impact investment, impact measurement and reporting principles and impact monetisation.

IIN webinar, 17 June - philanthropy's contribution to the future of impact investing

 
The IIN is hosting a webinar on the contribution of philanthropy to the future of impact investing.

Join this webinar, on Thursday 17 June, 11:45am, to explore these themes in-depth with Alastair Rhodes (BayTrust) and Raewyn Jones (WEL Energy Trust): difference between sustainable finance and impact investing, place-based investing, creating partnerships to increase chance of sustainable outcomes, importance of ecosystem building, shifting mindset from grant to impact, the impact of investments on communities and environments.

Mindful Money Awards


Mindful Money has announced the finalists for all seven categories in its ethical investment Awards. 

The finalists for the Best Impact Investment Fund are Community Finance, Impact Enterprise Fund, Purpose Capital and Soul Capital. Read more.

Awards winners will be announced at a presentation event starting at 3:30pm on Tuesday 29 June 2021 at GridAKL, Wynyard Quarter, Auckland. Register for event.

RIAA conference


Nearly 200 people attended the Responsible Investment Association Australasia (RIAA) conference, in-person on 1 June 2021, bringing together the responsible, ethical and impact investing communities.

There was an excellent session on place-based impact investing facilitated by Raewyn Jones (WEL Energy Trust) with panelists: Murray Lapworth (Rātā Foundation), Paul Gilberd (Community Finance) and Staci Hare (Rongowhakaata Iwi Trust). Read more.

 

Aotearoa NZ Impact Investments

Budget 2021 - NZGIF gets additional $300m.


Budget 2021 was focused on wellbeing and economic recovery. One of the major announcements was the additional $300m received by NZGIF (New Zealand Green Investment Finance).

This increases NZGIF's total investment pool to $400m to accelerate the investments in emissions reduction. Read more.

 

Mentemia gain investment from ACC and Pathfinder


Mentemia, a mental wellbeing platform, has attracted investment from ACC's Impact Fund and Pathfinder's KiwiSaver funds. ACC has invested in the range of $2m to $15m, while Pathfinder has invested $800,000.

Mentemia was a previous recipient of Ākina's Impact Investment Readiness Programme. Read more.

 

Salvation Army Social Housing opened by Prime Minister


Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern opened two newly built Salvation Army social housing developments at Westgate and Flatbush in Auckland, on Thursday 3 June.

The developments were facilitated by  impact-investing platform Community Finance and continues its commitment to increase New Zealand's affordable housing supply. Read more about the Salvation Army developments and Community Finance's The Aotearoa Pledge.

 

Global Perspective

Australian VC fund performing in top quartile of global VCs.


Giant Leap, an Australian impact-only venture capital (VC) fund is performing in the top quartile of global VCS, based on data from Cambridge Associates. It has funded 19 impact enterprises since its first 2016 fund. Read More

Impact Unicorns

Most investors in the VC world will be familiar with the term Unicorn, an enterprise valued at $1b or more. However, there's also "Impact Unicorns", which are startups valued over $1 billion and aim to improve one billion lives. Read more from McKinsey and Ron Cohen.
 

Asia Development Bank $375m gender bond co-led by ANZ and BNZ


The Asian Development Bank issued a 10-year NZ$375m gender bond in May 2021, jointly led by ANZ and BNZ. The bond will finance projects in the Asia and Pacific region to promote gender equality and provide greater access for women to access affordable child and family support, education and participation in decision-making and leadership. Read more.

A selection of educational research and content on impact investing:

  • BlueMark: published a benchmark to track best practices in Impact Management. The benchmark is based on data from 30 impact verifications for global investors with an aggregated $US99 billon in impact assets under management. Read more.
  • Purposeful Investments podcast: this is an accessible and informative podcast about ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and impact investing. Listen to podcast.
  • Case Foundation: The Millennial Impact Project, a groundbreaking 10-year research on 150,000 millennials and their attitudes to social change. Fascinating findings with relevance to giving and investing, for example 90% of research participants were motivated to give to a compelling cause not a single organisation. Read more and short video.
  • Fidelity Charitable: the Impact Investing on the Rise research highlights how financial advisors are approaching the impact investing conversation with clients and where further opportunity may lie. Read more.
