National Veterans Art Museum Tonight on VBC’s Memorial Day Program
Tonight at 7pm, we welcome the National Veterans Art Museum (NVAM) to share and discuss a special Memorial Day exhibit. To mark the day, check out NVAM’s renowned Vietnam Dog Tag exhibit. Inscribed with the name of a Vietnam KIA, each of the 58,307 dog tags was hand stamped with a vintage Graphotype machine by a veteran. The tags hang in order of date of death. The installation is the only memorial other than The Wall in Washington, D.C. to list all those killed in action during the Vietnam War. Tonight, we’ll also have family of 1st Lt. Robert C. Styslinger, who died at age 28 on November 29, 1950, at the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea. Styslinger’s remains were among those in the 55 boxes sent to the US from North Korea after President Donald Trump’s historic meeting with North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un in June 2018.

What’s the Difference Between Memorial Day and Veterans Day?
Many Americans couldn’t tell you. So, I’m struck that our VBC friend from Europe, Swedish Air Force veteran and history expert Lars McKie, sent me this poster, which states simply and clearly the differences among the three major military holidays. Stort tack, Lars!

Vietnam Mystery Memorial Still Has People Scratching Their Heads . . . and Mistakenly Declaring it “the First”
Thanks for Dan McPoyle for passing along an old news item I somehow missed about the discovery of a Vietnam War memorial no one remembers ever seeing before. There are no records of it, and no one knows anything about it. The monument is on private property in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and is not small. The memorial possesses two distinctive features that makes it stand out and baffles observer. Check out more here. Images from legion.org

David Wassell inherited almost 100 letters from his uncles Bob and Harry Dininger, who served in the 101st Airborne in Europe and the US Marine Corps in the Pacific, respectively. David has shared moving excerpts that tell their story. David will join our Veterans Breakfast Club morning program on Wednesday, June 9, along with journalist Mariko Fukuyama, to talk about their efforts to return American captured WWII photos and artifacts to Japanese families.
