It’s Pride month, and 301 is celebrating all things LGBTQIA+ with Sheffield’s inclusive offerings!

  • Edward Carpenter, a poet and early activist for gay rights, began writing his poetry whilst working in Sheffield inspired by the steelworkers he met!

  • The award-winning musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, about a teenage drag queen, is currently sweeping London’s West End. But did you know that it all started in Sheffield? Back in 2017, the Crucible was the first stage to host the legendary Jamie New and Loco Chanel.

  • The University of Sheffield was the first university in the UK to offer LGBT-inclusive accommodation. Roll out the rainbow carpet!

  • Sheffield hosts Transforming Cinema, a film festival dedicated to trans, non-binary, genderqueer, and non-cis voices within the industry. Though it’s been a few years since the last one (thanks, Covid) they’re still extremely active on Twitter, so let’s cross our fingers that 2022 has a revival in store!

Zine making is a super relaxing, chilled, creative experience that’s entirely customisable to you, so I’d highly recommend it!

De-stressing After Exams

Written by 301 Intern, Sanchari

Being in my fourth and final year of University now, I have definitely hit the saturation point for exams – especially since it is after my dissertation submission. I can’t help but think about all the things I’m going to do right after exams and currently, I’m just daydreaming about it.

Since the end of exam season is nearing, I thought I would give you some of my tips on how I de-stress or plan to just relax after exams.

First off, I definitely need more sleep! I think in between exams and dissertation, I have said goodbye to sufficient hours of sleep during these past weeks. So step 1, get loads of good sleep!

Secondly, I enjoy going out for walks in Sheffield – especially with the weather being so nice!! I keep discovering new places in Sheffield even though I’ve been here for 4 years. Here are some of my favourite places to around in Sheffield.
Endcliffe Park: I cannot believe that this park is located within the city. The moment I cross the big green grassy bit of the park I feel like I’m transported to a quaint little forest-y area even though I’m still very much in the city. Please have a walk through one of their trails and discover cute little ducks on the way! 😊
Wyming Brook: I had no idea this place existed until last year. It’s just a bus ride away from the main campus. Bus number 51 from the Children’s Hospital (which is opposite to Weston Park) goes to this place in an hour and it is beautiful! There is a nice trail that runs along beautiful streams and brooks and ends at a pub called ‘The Three Merry Lads’. The pub has some amazing fish and chips along with good vegetarian options too. :D
Lastly, Peak District: How can I not mention that? If you haven’t been there already, Peak District has loads of different places that you can explore. From having a nice afternoon tea and Bakewell tart at Bakewell to seeing Chatsworth House where the movie, Pride and Prejudice was filmed to just hiking to the top of Bamford Edge to get a breathtaking view of the peaks – you have the opportunity to visit there multiple times and experience something different every time. Below is a picture of Bakewell town. 😊
I also really enjoy dancing and for me, learning new dance routines and creating something new gives me a challenge or something to look forward to. I recently started recording myself too and showing it to my friends and family and their appreciation means a lot to me too. But even without that, I just feel happy when I’m learning something new and trying to be good at it. So, if you have a hobby, please take it up again and start enjoying that. :’)

Hope you have a great summer ahead. <3
