Give Big CHQ!

The library will once again be participating in Give Big CHQ, a 24-hour online fundraiser, which supports nonprofits in Chautauqua County.

Funds raised for the Prendergast Library will help support our "Tails and Tales" Summer Reading Challenge!

Give Big CHQ begins at midnight on June 10th and ends at 11:59 p.m. More information can be found at www.givebigchq.org, and donations can be made to the library at https://www.givebigchq.org/organizations/james-prendergast-library. Make sure to share your donation with the hashtag #GiveBigCHQ

Last year, the library raised $3,051 for our Summer Reading Challenge. Donations went toward local business gift cards as prizes for participants, take-‘n’-make kits for kids, and the purchase of our summer reading app.

Despite being closed to the public for several months due to COVID-19, the library engaged with hundreds of children, teens, and adults through our virtual events and challenges. We can’t wait to make Summer Reading 2021 even better!

New books

You answered our survey, and we have listened. We are purchasing more historical, multi-cultural, and literary fiction materials while ensuring that we still keep up with the genres we were already purchasing, such as mysteries, thrillers, and Westerns.

Ariadne by Jennifer Saint

Hypnotic, propulsive, and utterly transporting, Jennifer Saint's Ariadne forges a new epic, one that puts the forgotten women of Greek mythology back at the heart of the story as they strive for a better world.

The Secret Talker by Geling Yan

Hongmei is the perfect Chinese wife: beautiful, diligent, passive. Glen is the perfect American husband: intelligent, caring, well-off. From the outside, Hongmei and Glen's life in the San Francisco Bay Area seems perfect. But at home, their marriage is falling apart. Post-its left on the fridge are their primary form of communication.

Shakespeare in a Divided America by James Shapiro a Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle (CLSC) Author

In a narrative arching from Revolutionary times to the present day, leading scholar James Shapiro traces the unparalleled role of Shakespeare’s four-hundred-year-old tragedies and comedies in illuminating the many concerns on which American identity has turned.
