WELKOM!
Nieuwsbrief # 291. Zoals inmiddels wellicht her en der bekend zijn we door omstandigheden momenteel nogal onderbezet dus ook deze nieuwsbrief lukt niet elke week. Het goeie nieuws: wel veel mooie platen (we luisteren wel iets natuurlijk). Reigning Sound! Mdou Moctar! Holiday Ghosts! Maar ook Black Keys, Teenage Fanclub en FACS bevallen goed. Veel mooi ouds ook weer. Chilton live, Tony Joe White, Ace deeltje met nummers van Lou Reed, mooie seventies soul op Shaolin Soul vol 4, prachtig verzorgde Numero plaat van Female Species, dubbel cd met Lux & Ivy rockabilly favorieten. Kortom, luister, kom langs en koop/ bestel er lustig op los.
We zijn inmiddels weer gewoon open ook dus kom vooral weer eens langs. In principe zijn we er elke dag wel vanaf 12 uur.
We hebben ook de bakken met tweedehands maar weer eens wat aangevuld dus wie daar weer eens in wil neuzen geve een gil.
Hou er bij bestellingen een beetje rekening mee dat veel titels langer op zich laten wachten dan we gewend zijn. Kunnen we weinig aan doen helaas.

Mdou Moctar – afrique victime
Nieuwe lp van Toeareg gitarist Mdou Moctar. Het recept is inmiddels wel bekend. Maar het verveelt wederom geen seconde. Westere rockinvloeden, Afrikaanse woestijnsferen, spetterende gitaarpartijen. En vooral nog steeds enorm veel speelplezier uitstralend. Check het geweldige titelnummer. ‘If “Ilana” was a late ’60s early ’70s ZZ Top and Black Sabbath record – “Afrique Victime” is mid-’70s to early ’80s Van Halen meets Black Flag meets Black Uhuru.’ ”Producer en bassist Mikey Coltun vliegt 20 uur van Brooklyn, NYC en reist vervolgens 28 uur met de bus om Agadez te bereiken, zodat de band kan oefenen en opnemen. Hij werkte waar ze op dat moment in de wereld waren: studio’s, appartementen, hotelkamers, backstages op locaties en in veldopnames in Niger. FACS – present tense
Nieuwe FACS lp op Trouble in Mind. Band die per plaat zich ontwikkelt dan wel het roer wat omgooit, wat het wel zo spannend houdt. Altijd even wennen, soms tegen progrock aanhangend, maar ze groeien altijd per draaibeurt. ‘Chicago trio FACS never stop pushing forward; they’ve honed and refined their stark, minimal scrape and clatter for four years and counting, having risen out of the ashes of beloved Chicago band Disappears in 2018 with the bone-rattling intensity of Negative Houses. Alex Chilton – boogie shoes: live on Beale Street
Mooie release van historische waarde op Omnivore Records. Alex Chilton live op Beale Street in Memphis, in 1999. Zie hier de trailer. ‘ “I never saw him have so much fun on stage. Without rehearsal, Alex called songs and the band locked in. The pure joy of playing this music so freely with such legendary musicians comes across in every groove of the record.” — David Less, from his liner notes). Meer info: ‘When Fred Ford, co-founder of the Beale Street Music Festival, was diagnosed with cancer, David Less organized a fund raiser to help with his medical bills. Less contacted Memphis legend Alex Chilton (The Box Tops, Big Star), who was living in New Orleans, to ask him to participate. Alex said he didn’t have any musicians to play with in Memphis, so Less suggested the Hi Rhythm Section (the band behind classics from artists including Ann Peebles, Ike & Tina Turner, O. V. What Goes On – the Songs of Lou Reed – v/a
Veel relatief recent materiaal op de Ace cd. ‘The latest in Ace Records’ Songwriters series takes the listener from a version of ‘Why Don’t You Smile Now’ from Lou Reed’s pre-Velvet Underground days through selections from the band’s albums to three from 1972’s solo “Transformer”. Female Species – tale of my lost love
Eindelijk weer eens een lp op Numero Records. En uiteraard weer prachtig uitgevoerd. ‘A once-in-a-decade discovery of two sisters, married to music for life, always charging forward, indefatigable, indomitable, at last seen and heard. Na een deeltje met exotica, weer terug op iets bekender Cramps-terrein. Twee cd’s met rockabilly the Cramps way. En dat is altijd mooi en goed. ‘Featuring a string of no hit wonders called Jimmy (or Sonny), a gaggle of tunes about cars, drag racing, drive-by romancing, the cops, the latest dance trends and the wildest of parties.' Shaolin Soul Episode 4 – v/a
Vierde deel inmiddels in deze mooie serie verzamelaars met grotendeels lome soul uit het begin van de jaren ’70, nummers die veel gesampled zijn door hiphoppers. ‘With the compilation series “Shaolin Soul” we are always certain to be on the right side of the line since its 1st episode released in 1998 and which compiled two dozens of tracks sampled by RZA and the Wu-Tang Clan.’ Zoals gezegd prachtig spul en grotendeels bij het grote publiek onbekende nummers. Reigning Sound – a little more time with
Yesss!! Nieuwe lp van Reigning Sound! Dat gebeurt niet elke dag. Opgenomen in Memphis, toen Greg Cartwright daar een tijdje bivakkeerde in coronatijd en met de originele Memphis bezetting. Met veel orgel en die geweldige warme, soulvolle sound. En liedjes, meneer. Prachtige liedjes, de een na de ander, van de hand van onze favoriete liedjesschrijver van deze generatie. Met in vrijwel elk liedje de juiste snaar geraakt. Inclusief een mooie cover van Adam Faith’s I Don’t Need That Kinda Lovin’, een nummer dat al lang op hun live repertoire staat. Kortom, de zoveelste plaat in de lange rij Reigning Sound klassiekers. Wederom op Merge Records en m.m.v o.a. Holiday Ghosts – north street air
Derde geslaagde lp op rij van dit Engelse kwartet, vol met lekker rommelige DIY popliedjes. De eerste twee lp’s zaten op PNKSLM maar nu zijn ze verhuisd naar het grotere Fat Cat label. Misschien wel hun mooiste en in elk geval meest toegankelijke lp tot nu toe. En elk geval de beste geproduceerde tot nu toe, voor wie moeite heeft met DIY produkties. ‘Unadulterated and unclean, unabashed and uncom- promised. Through their love of artists such as The Kinks, Alex Chilton and The Nerves or any other artist who spends less time with the polishing cloth and more time with the power shower, Holiday Ghosts make music with a lean and primitive rock n roll spirit. Black Keys – delta cream
Nieuwe Black Keys plaat, hun tiende inmiddels. Een coverplaat deze keer. En best een geslaagd eerbetoon aan hun Mississippi blues roots. ‘‘The record celebrates the band’s roots, featuring eleven Mississippi hill country blues standards that they have loved since they were teenagers, before they were a band, including songs by R. L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough, among others. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney recorded Delta Kream at Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville; they were joined by musicians Kenny Brown and Eric Deaton, long-time members of the bands of blues legends including R. Teenage Fanclub – Endless Arcade
Best leuk nieuw plaatje van deze Schotten. Rocken doet het niet maar het sfeertje is prima. De Byrds invloeden zijn volop aanwezig. ‘Een typisch Teenage Fanclub geluid zoals je van ze gewend bent: de melodieën zijn zowel hartverwarmend als brekend, gitaren galmen en vervormen, het keyboard kronkelt en draait en met harmonie-bedekte refreinen breken door als de zon op een stormachtige dag.’ Hier een nummer. cd €16,90 lp €32,90 |
Damien Jurado - the monster who hated Pennsylvania
Nieuwe plaat van Jurado op het zojuist door hemzelf opgerichte Maraqopa label, genoemd naar de trilogie geproduceerd door zijn overleden makker Richard Swift. ‘Damien describes his new album as, “ten intense stories of people determined not to be broken by dire circumstances. Chills – scatterbrain
Weer eens een nieuwe plaat van Martin Phillipps uit Dunedin, Nieuw Zeeland. Ooit verantwoordelijk voor een stel klassieke singles op het legendarische Flying Nun label. But that was then and this is now natuurlijk. Hun zevende plaat. Grotendeels aangename en rustige popliedjes. ” ‘Scatterbrain’ is a life passing before your ears as uncertainty increases and fake news rumbles on; during which aliens invade, Phillipps scales the walls beyond abandon as he probes the minutiae of worlds within worlds and the hourglass fills.’ Luister op bandcamp. cd €16,90 lp €26,90 |
Tony Joe White – Smoke From The Chimney
Overleden en toch een nieuwe plaat, rara hoe kan dat? Nou, White had nog een stel demos gemaakt en die zijn in handen gevallen van Dan Auerbach en die heeft deze posthume plaat in elkaar geprutst en uitgebracht op zijn Easy Eye Sound label. En klinkt helemaal niet slecht! Zo’n plaat waar je eigenlijk niet zoveel van verwacht maar dat valt dus reuze mee. Hier een nummertje. cd €15,90 lp €23,90. [vinyl moet nog binnenkomen] |
Leon Gardner’s Igloo Records – v/a
Mooi produkt met funky, soulvol spul van de ons volstrekt onbekende Leon Gardner en op het ons eveneens volstrekt onbekende Igloo Records. En hoe dan ook een mooi verhaal. Lees maar: “B3 Hammond player Leon Gardner moved from Texas to Los Angeles sometime in the mid ’60s. Soon after arriving he set up his own Igloo records. Leon also arranged and produced other bands on the label such as the deep soul classic by the Jhamels ‘I’ve Cried’ and Wallace Petty Combo’s Petty Cash but never reached the success he had hoped for. As well as his other 45s released on Igloo, there were other recordings made for several other independent labels between 1965 and 1974, after which Gardner seemed to disappear under the radar. The general consensus is that he is currently was no fixed address and living somewhere in the Hollywood district of Los Angeles, yet all attempts to contact at this point were unsuccessful. This Leon Gardner / Igloo records LP was originally a project Gerald Short of Jazzman Records. Gerald worked on this over 10 years ago and spoke to many involved with the label who are no longer with us. He finally managed to track Leon down to a care home in LA but unfortunately, Leon passed away soon after Gerald reached out to him. Gerald decided not to continue with the LP out of respect, the information and text here is kindly supplied by Gerald so thanks to him for that. ‘ Luister de plaat op bandcamp.
