Loreto Highlights Update - 21st May 2021

Confirmation
Pupils from year 6 attended their Rite of Confirmation at St. Joseph's Church.  Unfortunately, His Lordhsip Bishop Carmel was recovering from an operation in hospital, so he was unbale to Confirm the pupils.  Monsignor Paul Bear was blessed by Bishop Carmel to Confirm the pupils in his absence.  Over two days, both Confirmations were beautifully conducted.

The Confirmations were live streamed, meaning relatives who were unable to attend could watch over proceedings.  Even our Foundation Stage One pupils were fascinated with watching the older Year 6 pupils in Church.
Traffic Free Tuesday
After a few weeks where numbers dwindled, we were very happy to welcome Year 4 this week and we had 15 join our #trafficfreetuesday initiative. 15 more children who care for the environment and are making a change!   Well done to the pupils in Year 4 and 5 who are supporting Traffic Free Tuesday by walking to school.  For those pupils who start at the border it is a 2km walk up to Loreto!
May Is The Month Of Mary
Pupils in Year 5 have created a display board to inform other pupils about why the Month of May is so important.  As we moved into May we celebrate Mary, for centuries, the Catholic Church has set aside the entire month of Mary to honour Mary, Mother of God. Not just a day in May, mind you, but the entire month.  In Ancient Rome, May was dedicated to Flora, the goddess of blooms, or blossoms. They celebrated ludi florals, or floral games at the end of April and asked the intercession of Flora for all that blooms.
Online Support - Parenting Tips!
With children using devices more regularly at home, especially during lockdown it is important to understand how you can help support children to use these devices responsibly.
This week we are focusing on some tips to help parents with the online world.  There are a series of short videos to help understand, some of which you might wish to share with your child.
Faith Diary
Pentecost Sunday is one of the Church’s greatest feasts because it celebrates the sudden and dramatic coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles as they cowered in the Upper Room, after Jesus had left them.  His coming completely transformed the frightened Apostles and gave those 12 simple men the vision, strength, and courage to go out and in just a few years, convert the known world to Christ’s teaching.  May we too be granted a new, deeper understanding of what our Faith means this Pentecost, and receive the strength and inspiration to share it with all we meet.
Bee A Sponsor!
The school is due to get its second hive of bees for the Apiary.  Mr Devincenzi-Clemens has been working through the practical element in bee management, more recently inspecting the bees at Tovey Cottage.  The bees are an important part of our eco-system, and a fantastic way to teach children about habitats, life cycles, and how honey is produced within the hive.
Would you like to sponsor our latest beehive at Loreto? Your name, family name or business name will be placed on the hive.  You will get updates on how the colony is progressing, be invited to attend a hive inspection, receive fresh local honey from the hive when it's ready - great for local allergies!  If you are interested in finding out more then please email Mr Devincenzi-Clemens here.
Rough Sleeping
Lexi in year 3 participated in ‘The Great Tommy Sleepout’ where she slept overnight in a cardboard box.  She raised over £300.00, Every penny raised will go directly to RBLI’s wide range of services providing a home, welfare and employment support to military veterans.
Environmental Awareness
Pupils from Loreto Convent School spent an hour with The Nautilus Project at Eastern Beach on Wednesday. The pupils learnt about how waste from the land harms our waters, acting by cleaning the beach.
We can't wait to see the total weight of waste removed!

This week, Mrs Napoli awarded first and second prizes to the Year 4 pupils for the Ancient Egypt projects they created in November. Each class receives a first and second prize. In Mrs Pitto's class, Charlotte won first prize and Stefan won second prize. LSSC Upcycling Club
Children in the LSSC club are busy most lunchtimes upcycling various items in preparation for a fundraising event to be held on Friday 25th June.  Planned and run by the students, unwanted materials are being converted into exciting new items such as bracelets, candle holders and plant pots.  These will go on sale, with funds being raised for local and international charities involved in sustainability.
We are looking forward to this event but need your support - please send in old T-shirts, tennis balls and clean tins, as well as any wool, old buttons and any other interesting items which can be upcycled.
