Principal's Message

Good Morning McGaugh Families,
I don't want to get ahead of myself, but if last Wednesday was any indication of what next school year might hold, I'm excited! Last Wednesday, both Cohorts A & B (all grade levels) were on campus. The students participated in academic lessons and team-building activities like getting to know you scavenger hunts, minute-to-win-it games, and classmate interviews. Frankly, it felt much like the first day of school.  I know our faculty and staff are excited to have all our Sea Lions in class together again this Wednesday (5/26).

Thank you to our 5th-grade teachers for such a fun-filled week of OSS alternative activities. Wednesday night's virtual smores, trivia, and campfire songs and Friday's field day were two of my favorite highlights. I nearly tore both hamstrings playing Gaga Ball with 5th graders wearing dress shoes, but I had tons of fun. I also appreciate the skill it takes to hit the target in field archery. Our 5th graders, including LosAL@Home, had a blast. Thank you again to our 5th-grade teachers!

That's all for now! Here are a few things to keep in mind this week:

  • 5/24 - 5/28 | McGaugh's Staff Appreciation Week
  • Wednesday, May 26, 2021 | A&B Cohorts (all grade levels) on campus
  • Friday, May 28, 2021 | Teacher Planning Day
  • Monday, May 31, 2021 | Memorial Day - No School

Best,

Dr. Issaic Gates

Attention McGaugh Families – Pavilions & McGaugh PTA have partnered up!

Seal Beach Pavilions has graciously offered to do a donation drive of sanitizer wipes for our school. This couldn’t have come at a better time as we have doubled our student count on Wednesdays with both cohorts attending school at the same time. Also, we should have plenty left to support a healthy, sanitized classroom going into next school year. So, next time you are in Pavilions, make sure to donate a wipe or two in honor of McGaugh!

Exciting News!!!  Last McGaugh PTA Meeting of 2020-21 will be IN-PERSON!!

Save Thursday, June 3rd at 8:15am for our last PTA meeting of the year inside the McGaugh Auditorium. This is such exciting news as we will actually get to see each other in-person and celebrate all of our accomplishments as a group.  For all new families who have not seen inside our auditorium or who have only met their PTA team on zoom, we cannot wait to meet you.  For all McGaugh veterans, please join us as we’ve missed you. This will be a quick meeting where we will celebrate our accomplishments and discuss the PTA’s gift back to the school.  Stay tuned for more information.

International Culture Club (ICC): Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month & May Book Club! 🌼📚

May is Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month! In celebration of the far-reaching history & impact of the AAPI community, each week the McGaugh ICC will highlight an influential Asian American or Pacific Islander. This week we are highlighting Ellison Shoji Onizuka, the first AAPI in space! Ellison was born on June 24, 1946, in a simple rural community in Kealakekua, Kona, Hawaii. From these humble beginnings, Ellison formulated his dream of venturing into space. Ellison excelled in school, graduating from Konawaena High School with honors in 1964.  He was also active in student council, National Honors Society, yearbook, varsity basketball and baseball and Boy Scouts.  After graduating from high school, Ellison attended the University of Colorado, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering followed by a Master of Science degree in aerospace engineering.  He joined the United States Air Force in January 1970. Against stiff competition (8,000 applicants), Ellison was selected in 1978 as one of 35 astronauts for NASA’s Space Shuttle Program! He was the first Japanese American selected to participate in America’s space program. On January 24, 1985, Ellison first entered space as a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle Discovery – America’s first classified manned military space flight.  The mission was a success, and Ellison was honored as the first Asian astronaut to venture into space. Soon after, Ellison was selected for Challenger Flight 51-L along with six other crew members.  The crew of this mission was carefully chosen to reflect the spirit of America.  All walks of life, backgrounds and regions were represented on his shuttle flight, including elementary school teacher Christa McAuliffe, who would be the first civilian in space.  On January 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger lifted from the earth.  At 11:39 a.m., 73 seconds after liftoff, the orbiter tragically exploded and ended his and 6 other astronaut's lives, but not their courage or legacies.  Learn more about the inspiring life of AAPI astronaut Ellison Shoji Onizuka HERE.

“Your vision is not limited by what your eye can see, but by what your mind can imagine.  Make your life count – and the world will be a better place because you tried.” – Ellison S. Onizuka

And lastly, please don't forget to join The next ICC Book club at 6:30 pm, Thursday, May 27th! We will be discussing How Much of These Hills Is Gold, a critically acclaimed novel by C Pham Zhang. Please email: ninananda@yahoo.com with any questions. We look forward to seeing you there! Emoji
