There are many aspects of life that are out of our control. You might feel that is particularly true if you’re living with Parkinson’s disease (PD).  But diet – the foods that we eat every day – is one of those elements that we do have control over, and many people with PD are constantly searching for diets and foods that will maximize their quality of life and allow them to live their best life with this disease. At APDA we receive many nutrition-related questions. It is a very popular topic, and rightly so since proper nutrition plays a big role in your overall wellness.

As always, APDA has a wealth of information to help you make sense of it all. Here are some of our most popular resources for nutrition:
MIND & Mediterranean Diets: Dr. Gilbert explains what recent studies reveal about these two popular diets. Learn more about what these diets are and their pros/cons so you can decide what’s right for you.

Spotlight on Parkinson’s Disease: Living Well Every Day:  For a general overview of nutritional tips for someone with PD, this webinar presents strategies, based on firm scientific evidence, that help support a healthy lifestyle for people with PD.

Weight Loss & PD:  Weight loss that is attributed to PD can be caused by a variety of reasons including decreased appetite, increased energy expenditure, swallowing difficulties, and poor gut motility. Because weight loss has been linked to a poorer quality of life in PD and may contribute to increasing frailty, it is important to take action. This blog offers practical tips that may help.

Nutrition & PD Three-Part Series: In this three-part blog series, Dr. Gilbert covers different aspects of nutrition and how they specifically relate to PD. There are a lot of popular diets and trendy supplements, so it can be hard to sift through the information to know what’s really best for you.
  • Part One: What we know and don’t know about avoiding particular foods/supplements
  • Part Two: What we know and don’t know about taking particular foods/supplements
  • Part Three: What we know and don’t know about adhering to particular diets that are often asked about for PD.
Don’t be fooled by quick-fix diets and supplements you might hear about – there’s no quick-fix or one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to nutrition for people with PD.

If you have a specific question about nutrition or other PD-related topics, we welcome you to submit your question to our Ask A Doctor feature on our website.
We also encourage you to follow APDA on FacebookTwitter and Instagram to stay informed and updated.
Don’t forget to check out our Virtual Events Calendar for a wide variety of free programs and classes you can join from anywhere. There are some great programs coming up – register today!
