Readers SOAR to New Heights in CHMS Reading Challenge

CHMS’s school-wide reading challenge SOAR (Stop Open And Read) came to a close this past Monday. SOAR encourages the students of CHMS to read for enjoyment and count their pages while coming together as a community of readers for a span of five weeks from April 10 – May 17.

Over the course of the past five weeks, the CHMS community has read a record-smashing total of 671,937 pages. This surpasses the previous record of 476,825 pages set in the inaugural year of the reading challenge in 2019 by almost 200,000 pages.

The 179 readers read an average of 3,754 pages per person.

One team of six 8th grade students read a total of 104,339 pages averaging to a total of 17,390 pages per reader, gaining the coveted top team award.

Other awards include the top student from each grade level.

6th grade: 42,737 Pages

7th grade: 26,148 Pages

8th grade: 27,786 Pages

Each of these students will be recognized for their achievement with a book of their choice from the 2022 Rebecca Caudill (6th and 7th grade) or Lincoln (8th grade) list.

I am beyond proud of all our SOAR readers. I am eagerly looking forward to what next year’s reading challenge will bring! Congratulations readers!

Seeking Parent/Citizen Applicants to Serve on BOE Committees

Hello CHMS Parents and Guardians! The District 181 Board of Education is seeking parent and community representatives to join its Finance and Facilities Committee or Academic Success Committees (ASC). The Finance and Facilities Committee provides input on major revenues, expenses, investment practices, and policies related to the management of District finances.

The Academic Success Committee (ASC) is designed to provide two Board of Education members, District 181 leadership, and community-appointed members the opportunity to discuss, review, and provide feedback on academic programs, instruction and assessment. The goals set forth by The Department of Learning and ASC are directly aligned to the District 181 Strategic Plan.

Those selected to serve on committees are required to complete the Open Meetings Act training and attend the meetings during their two-year term. You can fill out a digital application for the Finance and Facilities Committee membership here and for the Academic Success Committee (ASC) membership here. Alternately, you can download a PDF of the ASC application  here or a PDF of the Finance/Facilities application here and mail or email it to Jean Duggan, 115 West 55th St. Clarendon Hills, IL 60514.  Completed applications are due no later than 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26.

We hope you will consider applying or sharing this information with a friend or neighbor who may be interested.  Thank you!

Covid-19 Surveillance Testing

We hope to add more students and staff to the Surveillance Testing program and encourage those who signed up to complete the testing. The more students and staff who sign up the more effective it is as a safety measure. It is free, easy and quick to both sign-up and participate. Thank you to those who are already participating in the program.

Our goal is to avoid any potential school closures by identifying COVID asymptomatic individuals, who can still spread the virus to others. We encourage all of our students and staff to participate in this quick and easy process. As we continue full in-person, this program adds another layer of protection and reassurance for our school community.

Testing kits will be distributed on the Wednesday following the week of signup.

Families sign up by logging in to Skyward and clicking on “Forms” to access the sign-up form. Please fill out the form on a desktop/laptop as opposed to mobile phone/tablet to ensure your form is received and the final checkbox is checked. There is no cost to participate. Watch a video explaining the process here. Read more about testing here.
