This is the 81st issue of Vicious Shivers,
a (mostly) weekly newsletter for fans of my work.

The weather doesn’t usually affect me in a negative way, but it has been raining for the last two weeks, and it has finally gotten under my skin. Everything feels... damp. My soul feels... sodden. It’s really drained me for whatever reason. Yesterday was mostly dry, although it was humid as Hell, like the air was trying to smother me. Today is supposed to be dry and sunny. Tomorrow, too. Then... more rain! I’m trying to keep my spirits and motivation up, but monsoon season in Missouri is a struggle for me this time around.

A couple of bright spots this week. Not bright as in sunny but bright as in fun. Cindy and I attended a surprise birthday party for a friend a few nights ago. It was held at a local brewery that I really liked. Great beer. Great cocktails. It’s a place I’ve happily decided to visit again and again. In addition, we held a party for my kid yesterday. If you read the newsletter, you know he just turned 13. We got 10 of his friends together for bowling and laser tag and video games. A few of them even stayed the night. I think they all had a lot of fun, though it was a late night here at the Bunngalow.

Now that the family is vaccinated, we’re going to take a road trip vacation in a few weeks. Like everyone else, we haven’t traveled at all in nearly two years, but we’re going to give it a go and do some very touristy things in Tennessee.

And that makes me think about conventions and store signings. I don’t think I’ll be traveling to a convention any time soon. It will be 2022 for me. And when I return to conventions, it’ll be a little different, as I’ve noted in the past. I’m no longer bringing boxes and boxes of books to sell. Maybe just a few things. But I’m looking forward to seeing folks again. There’s already a couple of shows on the books for me next year. I might do a few store signings this year. There are some shops I’ve been planning on signing at, but that got derailed by the pandemic. And there is a library event coming for me in the fall. Slowly but surely I’m peeking out to see what the signing/appearance landscape looks like! Hell... I might even be adding an appearance calendar to the newsletter again in the near future!
SHADOWMAN issue 2 comes out this week! The response to the first issue was really positive, and the early reviews of issue 2 have been great as well. I can’t wait for you to see where this thing is going!

The hellscape known as the Deadside has pried open a doorway to Earth in Enoch, Arizona! And our only chance at survival against the awoken desert beasts is SHADOWMAN.

Here is a cool recap of the first issue (and a sneak peek at issue 2) - https://t.co/AmeT4u9TJD?amp=1

And here is an early review of our second issue - https://sodaandtelepaths.com/exclusive-first-review-shadowman-2/
Dynamic Forces ran an interview with me about my upcoming horror/revenge series BASILISK. Check it out if you want to get some hints about what to expect from the upcoming series! You can read the interview here

Orders on this book have been really strong, and I really think it is going to sell out pretty fast. You do not want to miss it.

The first issue of the series is in shops June 2!
I mentioned this idea I had for Patreon last week, and I think I’m getting started with it this week.

I'm going to develop a new comic series on Patreon. I'll take it from the initial concept, through concept refinement, through the pitch development, through scripting (at least 1 chapter or issue), through finding an artist, and through the pitching process. If the book finds a home with a publisher, I'll let patrons know how that is proceeding, too.

None of this will be based on any idea that I currently have. It will be developed on Patreon. This means, of course, that the idea might "die on the vine" and I'll then start working up another idea. It will also mean that if the comic ever sees publication, the story will be well and truly spoiled for patrons, but that’s okay.

This will be something completely new, the development of a new idea from the ground up.

Since it will be very heavy behind-the-scenes stuff, I'll open it up at the $5 patron level.

You can check out the Patreon here
One of my Dungeons and Dragons campaigns is wrapping up in the next couple of weeks, and I’ve decided I’m going to dive back into running Call of Cthulhu as a replacement. I’ve been digging through my collection of CoC supplements, and it’s just amazing how much awesomeness is crammed into those pages. Those books are just treasure troves of inspiration—especially the material Pagan Publishing was putting out in the early 90s. Of course, looking through this stuff sparks my interest in collecting those books again. I have a ton of those books... but it is never enough!
As always, thanks for sticking with me! Continue reading for an exciting new book announcement!

LUCKY DEVIL

A new series has been announced from Dark Horse!

LUCKY DEVIL is by Fran Galan, El Torres, and myself. It is an initial 4-issue series, but (assuming readers want more) we could tell many more stories in this world and with these characters. A series of miniseries. The story follows despondent schlub Stanley, who finds himself possessed by a powerful demonic spirit. In a rare moment when he is in control, he scrapes together enough money for a bargain basement exorcism. The exorcism works! The demon is sent packing. But all of the demon’s infernal powers remain with Stanley. What does an ordinary guy with all the power of a demon lord do? Well, discovering that is part of the fun. Suffice it to say, the Lords Below do not approve of Stanley’s antics.

The series announcement (and a few preview pages) were posted on IGN. You can read the piece here.

LUCKY DEVIL arrives in August.

HAIL STANLEY!

THINGS TO COME...

Here is a quick and dirty list of upcoming projects. In most cases, I'm only listing projects that are definitely on the schedule with a published. Oftentimes, I will not be able to share much information, but I can at least tease the future! Everything here is, of course, subject to change.

New listings or newly revealed information will appear in RED.

  • JUNE 2021 - PARASOMNIA, a dark fantasy/horror story that takes place in both the waking world and the realm of dream. It features swordplay and ghosts in the night and strangers with no name.
  • JUNE 2021 - BASILISK, A horror maxi-series about a group of mysterious figures with awesome, frightening abilities. It’s a story of revenge where an average person makes a desperate stand against powers she cannot comprehend.
  • JUNE - BEYOND MORTAL, a story of the world's greatest heroes battling elder gods from beyond our reckoning.
  • JULY 7 - THE LAST BOOK YOU'LL EVER READ #1, the beginning of a horror maxi-series about the falsehood of civilization. What happens when the illusion is ripped away?
  • JULY 14, 2021 - BLACK HAMMER VISIONS #6
  • JULY 21, 2021 - TALES FROM HARROW COUNTY: FAIR FOLK #1 - a return to the world of haints and folk magic!
  • JULY 21, 2021 - THE GHOUL NEXT DOOR, a middle reader horror graphic novel from HarperCollins. It’s about a kid who befriends a ghoul in the cemetery near his house.
  • AUGUST, 2021 - GODZILLA: WORLD OF MONSTERS, collecting several Godzilla books, including my own GODZILLA: CATACLYSM.
  • AUGUST 2021 - LUCKY DEVIL, horror/comedy story about possession and the power struggle between infernal and celestial forces that catches mankind in the crossfire.
  • A horror maxi-series about a mysterious town and mysterious experiments that have played out there.
  • A horror one-shot inspired by one of Grimm’s fairy tales.
  • A return to a world of magicians and family intrigue.
  • A new endeavor involving an indie comic that I’ve loved since I was a kid. A new shared universe that I have a stake in.
  • A new horror/adventure series featuring some of the world’s most famous villains.
  • An insane story set in one of the most recognizable comic universes around.
  • A horror OGN where reality and surreality clash in a murderous way.
