The CEBIC team on the road with OzHarvest

The Path to Half identified the importance of increasing food rescue, recovery and donation to achieve Victoria's target of halving food waste by 2030. Recently, members of the CEBIC team joined food rescue organisation OzHarvest on a day out to see how their operation works.

Emily and Sarah were shown around the warehouse, which houses around 8 vehicles and excess stock that has been collected. The warehouse is also used for corporate cooking days using the collected foods, which are turned into meals and distributed to centres that support people in need.

Various supermarkets were visited to collect and redistribute food that would otherwise be destined for waste. The discarded food consisted of overstock of certain foods, items that were edible but about to reach their ‘best before’ date, fruit and veg that were slightly knocked around or less visually appealing, and packets that had been opened but the food product itself was still individually wrapped and intact. The majority of wasted foods included bread, eggs and bananas.

In a day, around 1,000kg of food is collected and redirected to people in hardship, refugees, the homeless, and a huge array of others by organisations such as Northpoint, The Australian Red Cross, and St Vincent's de Paul Society soup van.

CEBIC is leading a workshop in early June with food rescue, food industry, and senior government stakeholders in partnership with Stop Food Waste Australia to identify opportunities and barriers to reach this target. Stay tuned to hear about the workshop outcomes.

Research and Insights

Highlights of the Australian Dairy Industry Sustainability Forum – May 2021

The Australian Dairy Industry Sustainability Forum, a long-standing stakeholder reference group for the Australian Dairy Industry Sustainability Framework was held in May 2021. The key theme looked at the role of the Australian dairy industry as part of a sustainable food system reimagined. It doubled up as an independent dialogue for the United Nations Food Systems Summit 2021.

There was a great mix of people in the room representing the full dairy supply chain and various innovators and businesses all working together. Conversations mentioned circular economies and how the dairy industry could find ways to increase circularity in the milk manufacturing process and also in bottles and cartons.

Some great knowledgeable speakers presented some of the key issues in the dairy industry around sustainability particularly focusing on health, the challenges of a global market, and the impact COVID19 has had in the last 12 months.
