1. News

The University of Toronto is taking a wide range of precautions to curtail the risk of COVID-19 transmission. As the situation evolves, U of T will monitor public health guidance daily to ensure that its measures are up to date and informed by evidence. See the 12 ways UofT is preparing for a safe return.

Check out this new Heritage Minutes segment that pays tribute to the discovery of insulin at the University of Toronto’s department of physiology in 1921.

The segment follows the patient journey of a young and emaciated Leonard Thompson, who would become the first diabetes patient to be successfully treated with the life-saving extract.

2. IMS Scientific Day is this week!

IMS Scientific Day is taking place this Wednesday and Thursday! It is the academic highlight of the year,  designed to highlight student achievements, teaching excellence and provide opportunities for students to work on presentations skills. All students and faculty are encouraged to attend. Don't forget to register!

Why Graphic Medicine? A chat with Whit Taylor

Whit Taylor, award-winning cartoonist, writer and editor, makes comics about public health, social science, race and gender.

Grant Writing Courses (SSHRC, CIHR and NSERC)
May 31 - June 14


To the attention of all graduate students applying for SSHRC, CIHR and NSERC grants in Fall 2021. The Graduate Centre for Academic Communication (GCAC) is offering 6-hour courses in May/June (2 hours a week for 3 weeks) on writing SSHRC, CIHR and NSRERC grants. Material covered will also be relevant to OGS applicants; however, the focus of the courses is on the grants named. If you are preparing to submit a grant proposal this fall, please feel welcome to register at the links below. All courses are synchronous and because they include samples of previous winners they will not be recorded. Therefore attendance at the time of the courses is required.

Graduate Student Facilitators Needed for SURP Student Social 
June 15, 9:00am

We are seeking outgoing and enthusiastic student leaders to act as breakout room facilitators at an upcoming Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Social.  The Social will be taking place on June 15 at 9:00 am.  Facilitators will be responsible for leading ice breaker activities for a student meet-and-greet event.

Indigenous Researcher Spotlight Initiative

The month of June is National Indigenous History Month. As part of celebrating and honouring contributions of Indigenous researchers, the Institute of Medical Science Students’ Association at U of T will be highlighting Indigenous research on social media and over email in the month of June. If you self-identify as indigenous or conduct indigenous-related research, we would love to highlight your research, academic and co-curricular contributions. Please fill out the google form if you are interested, and we will contact you. All participants will receive a gift card as a token of our gratitude!
Are you passionate about student leadership, advocacy, and wellness? Do you want to improve the culture of learners at Sunnybrook, while making friends and having fun along the way? Then nominate yourself for an SRI Student Network (SSN) executive role for the 2021-2022 academic year! The following four (4) SSN positions are open for nominations:

Community-Engaged Learning Seminar for Doctoral Students
Applications due June 30, 2021 

The Community-Engaged Learning Seminar for Doctoral Students, which will run from October 2021 to April 2022, will virtually bring together 25 doctoral students from across the University to discuss community-engaged learning as a form of community-university engagement. A key component of the program will involve a collaborative research project with fellow seminar participants and a community partner. Doctoral students preparing for faculty positions can enrich their teaching, research and professional service through community engagement. Doctoral students who plan to pursue non-academic positions can develop new skills and networks through community engagement.

Research Associate | Drs. Sumit Gupta & Paul Nathan, Sick Kids

Drs. Sumit Gupta and Paul Nathan are seeking a research associate to be based out of Sick Kids and work with us on our various projects using health services data to study children, adolescents and young adults with cancer. Most of this will be using ICES administrative data, so experience with those databases is a definite asset. Apply here.

Project Manager | Dr. Sowmya Viswanathan, Krembil Research Institute

This is temporary position that will grow into a permanent position. This is also a growth opportunity to become a program manager and then lead a centre that is focused on clinical studies using cell-based therapies for the treatment of osteoarthritis. Find out more here

7. Did you know? Collaborative Specializations

Collaborative Specializations are programs that a student can join in adjunct to their degree program at the IMS. Joining one of these programs is not mandatory for graduation, but the programs can give you the opportunity to enrich your graduate experience by exploring a research area in-depth with students and faculty who share your passion. It also gives you access to focused course offerings and a specialization designation from the School of Graduate Studies upon your IMS degree completion. Some Collaborative Specializations may have additional requirements that must be fulfilled in order to successfully complete the program and have it added to you diploma.

The IMS Graduate Coordinators, Dr. Lucy Osborne and Dr. Vasu Venkateswaran, will be holding weekly virtual office hours.
