Good morning kwippers. With everything going on in the world, it can sometimes seem impossible for the average person to make an impact. However, every single one of us can be part of the solution, whether it's fighting inequality or tackling climate change (while acknowledging that a handful of firms are responsible for a large part of the climate crisis). Check out this helpful guide that highlights easy things we can do (even from our sofas) to make an impact.

For all new subscribers to our community, thanks for joining us! Our main goal here is to push sustainability and innovation news stories to the top of the agenda, especially now as our world tries to recover from the pandemic. SUSTAINABILITY

Sucking out CO2

In major new trials across the UK, climate-heating carbon dioxide will be sucked from the air using trees, peat, rock chips, and charcoal. Scientists have stated that past failures to cut emissions means some CO2 will need to be removed from the atmosphere to reach net zero targets by 2050. The £30m project is funded by UK Research and Innovation and will test ways to do this effectively and affordably on over 100 hectares of land, making it one of the biggest trials globally. Degraded peatlands will be re-wetted and replanted, while rock chips that absorb CO2 as they break down in soil will be tested on farms, and special charcoal will be buried at former mine sites and railway embankments. Cutting emissions as fast as possible still remains vital to tackle climate change, however scientists at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have concluded that there is no way of keeping the global temperature rise to the internationally agreed target of 1.5C without both cutting emissions and removing billions of tonnes of CO2 a year by 2050.

INNOVATION

Putting offices on energy saving mode

A recent report from the Green Alliance think tank found that businesses across the UK waste £60m worth of energy annually. Surple, a Welsh start-up, wants to change this and help businesses reduce carbon emissions, energy use and utility bills by analyzing office building data. Surple offers an automated energy analytics service that businesses can use to easily identify and reduce energy waste. While creating the product, the team noticed that energy suppliers struggled to retain business customers who frequently switched suppliers based on price, rather than quality. As a result, they adapted their route to market to partner with energy suppliers too. With extended office shutdowns during the pandemic, Surple once again adapted and helped clients record and closely monitor the energy consumption of their offices in lockdown. Surple's green credentials have been recognized externally - in 2019, it was one of Tech Nation''s 2019 Rising Stars and in 2020, it joined Google for Startups' UK Immersion programme.
