EUROPEAN RIVERS AND WETLANDS 2021
The full programme with the complete list of speakers for the May 26 and 27 European River Symposium is now on line and can be downloaded here.
In addition to the opening addresses, a host of top level keynote presentations from represenatives from international institutions, Goverment, NGO's and Business headline the programme.
Over 70 additional experts and persons active in river management and sectors influencing rivers will be providing presentations and are participating in panels throughout the two day event.

High potential for river continuity restoration for more biodiversity in Greater Europe!
ECRR Policy and Planning Survey learns that more than 75% of the countries have a river continuity restoration policy to restore river flows. Fish passes, natural by passess and dam removals are equally implemented restoration measures. For 50% of the barriers, plans of measures are available. More funding is needed and should be provided by hydropower, and agricultural sectors and water utility companies as the main riverwater users. More about the challenging developments on this issues are presented and discussed in this session.

Scientists and river managers have a different view of the riparian areas, the latter are more concerned with practical issues, while the former dedicate their attention to the functioning and the relationship among processes and entities. Even more diffrent is the view of policy and law makers whose view of riparian systems needs to accomodate also for societal needs such as public safety and economical development. The three views are not necessarely in contrast, they are simply different because, different are the objectives of the three groups. However, such miss alignment between views negatively reflects on the communication and the support of these groups provide to each other. The challenges to overcome the miss alignement by concrete solutions will be discussed in this session.

As part of the European Green Deal, the Commission proposed in September 2020 to raise the 2030 greenhouse gas emission reduction target, including emissions and removals, to at least 55% compared to 1990. This goal puts even greater emphasis on increasing the use of predictable climate-frendly electricity production technologies. At the same time, in the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2030, the European Commission is proposing targets for ensuring more free-flowing rivers within the Union.
The results of the discussions in the session can be used to support follow-up activities, for example to provide input to the ongoing development of targets and implementation approaches at EU level and as a basis for advice in the development of national policies. This will be beneficial for all participating countries in their goals of achieving the targtes in EU and national water legislation as well as the political commitments made in the EU Biodiversity Strategy, the EU Green Deal and in the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including several of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The session will showcase and demonstrate and discuss the importance of sharing best practice of river restoration and learning from each other enabling practitioners to constantly review how things can be done better and on a scale that can make a greater difference and motivate stakeholders to do more for both people and environment. The discussion will be related to ECRR's overall strategy and the revival of the Community of Practitioners (CoP). The CoP webpages at the ECRR website will be launched in this session. Moreover, there is an informal part in the session enabling ECRR Association and Network members meeting and greeting each other, after often many may years they have met before.
