June News

Kia Ora Koutou,

Last month marked the third birthday of NZSN. Throughout the past three years, we have seen a large increase in the numbers of school nurses joining us, and joining the workforce due to this governments expansion of the school nurse roll-out. Currently, workforce and employment conditions for School Nurses vary hugely across the country, such as scope of practice, working conditions, facilities, remuneration - the list goes on. However, despite this, we see evidence of school nurses where ever they are and whatever their workforce conditions are, giving exemplary care to their students. School Nurses work diligently with students and their whanau, collaboratively with their education, health and social service colleagues, and with a strong desire to see improved equitable outcomes for all young people, making a difference every day in the life of their students.

The word 'Mahi' is often translated to mean 'work' but a deeper meaning reflects 'to work with a higher purpose, to work towards a noble cause, to work with mana, and with pride'.
So our message to school nurses on our third anniversary is:

Your mahi has value. Your mahi has mana. Be proud. You are making a difference every day for your students.

One of our aims in creating this website was to reduce the time and effort individuals put into searching, creating and maintaining policies, procedures and resources that support youth wellbeing. We value contributions from right across NZ that have helped make this site the amazing resource library it is.
Have a great resource to share? Our website content coordinators would love to hear from you!

Should School Nurses
drug-test students?
NZNO Consultation Request: Drug and Substance Checking legislation

Health Professionals working in education settings can sometimes find themselves navigating new territory without clear guidance or frameworks. Drug testing of students is one such situation. NZNO welcomes your feedback on a bill which aims to minimise drug and substance harm by allowing drug and substance checking services to operate legally in New Zealand. You can read more on the bill here and respond to NZNOs consultation request here

We would suggest you check out our NZSN position statement (Co-Designed with the NZ Drug Foundation) which takes into consideration both legislative and ethical considerations related to drug testing in schools.

Standing Order Update:

You may notice our SO templates on the website are temporarily suspended- these are undergoing a re-write to ensure these are up-to-date and current. They will be back soon, new and improved!

Take your career in Youth Health to a higher degree

At the University of Auckland you can study the Youth Health specialisation in either a Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences, a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences or Master of Health Sciences.

There are a number of courses you can take in the Youth Health specialisation and we currently have limited places available in:

PAEDS 719 – Health, Education and Youth Development

Examines the overlap of health and education in the context of youth development. It reviews the 'business' of schools, the Health and Physical Education curriculum, school-based health and support services, whole-school approaches to health, and the health and education needs of students not engaged with the school system.

This postgraduate course is offered through a blend of on-campus and online delivery and is ideal for professionals working with young people in health, education and social service settings.
