National Sorry Day 2021
National Sorry Day 2021
A large crowd assembled on Wednesday (26 May) in Kalinga Park for the annual National Sorry Day Ceremony hosted by Moira Bligh, President of the Noonga Reconciliation Group. Her 93-year-old mum Auntie Ruth Hegarty planted a native hibiscus donated by Council to mark the occasion. There were very moving performances by local school children.
Pooches in the Park
The pooches living in Northshore Hamilton got together (with their owners) on Saturday 22 May and my labrador Leo found it hard to resist the puptisserie treats!

Thanks to Frasers Property for sponsoring the event in the beautiful Northshore Hamilton Park.
Footpath Repair

We have lots of wonderful shade producing trees in our streets, but they can play havoc with our footpaths and unfortunately, sometimes there's no other option other than to remove the tree. But where we can, a replacement footpath can deviate from the traditional straight line. Well done to our footpath crew.

Council's New Media Conversion Station

Brisbane City Council is encouraging residents to dust off their old videos, cassettes, film negatives and floppy disks and preserve their old memories at Council’s new free media conversion station.

Many households have a stockpile of priceless memories on old formats and the new permanent facility at Carindale Library would provide people with an opportunity to convert them to digital format and make them last forever.

Converting tapes and films into digital files can come at a cost and that’s why we at Council are proud to offer this new service for free to all residents, including non-library members. Many of us are sitting on a gold mine of precious photos, videos and recordings in retro formats like VHS tapes, film and cassettes with no easy means to bring them back to life.

Council delivered the new Media Conversion Station in partnership with the State Government. You can book upcoming group information sessions via Council’s website at: www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/libraries

Suburban Economic Sponsorship Program

Brisbane City Council aims to drive suburban economic vitality by supporting initiatives and activations that bring communities and consumers into local precincts.

The sponsorship program welcomes applications for events and activations that create lively and vibrant local business areas. Up to $10,000 may be available per application.

How does it work?
Consideration will be given to sponsorship applications that contribute to the delivery of one or more of the following:
- potential to generate additional foot traffic and potential customers for surrounding businesses
- potential to activate shopfronts through art, displays, exhibitions or pop-ups
- potential to bring activity and interest to suburban business areas through festivals, markets and events.

New Crosby Park Small Dog Off-Leash Area (DOLA)

We've recently added a small dog and puppy area to the Kalinga Park DOLA. There is a growing trend in dog registrations of smaller breeds, and requests for separate areas for them in DOLAs. If space permits, this can be provided. Work is currently underway to provide a similar small dog and puppy area at Crosby Park Albion.

In a community-led Facebook poll of Crosby Park dog off-leash users, 70% said yes to the question posed about the provision of a small DOLA facility. A formal petition with the same request was also presented to Council. It followed reports of attacks on small dogs by larger dogs here.

In an area of nearly 4000 square metres, an area of about 750 square metres will be reserved for smaller dogs and puppies with separate entrances.

Tour de Brisbane 2021 Road Closures

The second annual Tour de Brisbane event is taking place across Brisbane on Sunday 11 April 2021. More than 6,000 cyclists of all ages and abilities are expected to participate and help us fundraise for the Common Good, an initiative of The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation, raising funds for organ transplant research.

To deliver a safe and secure event for riders and spectators, there will be major road closures and changed traffic conditions throughout Brisbane under the professional management of Queensland Police Service and Altus Traffic Control.

Road closures along the course will be in operation between 4.30 am and 2.00 pm on Sunday 11 July to facilitate the Tour de Brisbane.

Updated road closure information and timing, including a map, will be available at www.tourdebrisbane.org/roads.

If you have any questions/concerns, please do not hesitate to contact via phone on 1300 28 29 49 or by email at tourdebrisbane@nxsports.org.

The Beirne Park Upgrade

Following requests to me from local residents, Council recently undertook works at The Beirne Park, Hendra to fence the inner perimeter of the playground making it safer for children. There's 3 access gates and a new rubber path to connect the swing set to the footpath.

Anzac Day 2021

As good as the driveway services were last year, there is nothing like observing this solemn commemoration of Anzac Day with our community. Federal MP for Brisbane Trevor Evans, State MP for Clayfield Tim Nicholls and I attended several services in our local area.

Crosby Park Bushcare Group
Join the Working Bee - Sunday 30th May from 8 am at Crosby Road steps.

This month they will be tendering to the new plants from their March planting and removing pesky weeds and would love to see you there!

They took part in the 'Paddle Against Plastics' at Yowoggera Park in Albion a few weeks ago to remove litter from Brisbane’s iconic Breakfast Creek (Barrambin).

They said it was a great morning - with an excellent turnout and not as much plastic as they thought they'd pick up... which of course is a good sign! See the Facebook post and pics on their Facebook Page.

They are always looking for more people to work with and volunteer their time, for more information visit their Facebook page also.
