We are looking forward to a great year! We hope to include virtual and in-person events. One example is the virtual NMEA Conference on July 13-17 which will be celebrated locally with an in-person visit to the new Jones Beach Nature and Energy Center.  Look for details in the following posts.

Don't forget to check out our Facebook page which features more announcements.  We are currently highlighting some great pictures from this year's "It's My Estuary Day," coordinated by our executive Director, Adam Riback.  Revised this year due to Covid restrictions it never the less involved several informative booths, a beach cleanup and kayaking.  It remains a unique event and a template for what can be done by your school. Check out the pictures and contact Adam for more information at executivedirector@nysmea.org

Hope to see you at the June 12 - 32nd Bi-Annual Denyse Wharf Cleanup! (Details are posted on www.nysmea.org )

Over the past year, New York Sea Grant has been developing a new curriculum focusing on the environmental and social impacts of marine debris and plastic pollution, titled “Plastic Pollution and You: An Interdisciplinary Curriculum to Explore Our Role in Plastic Pollution”. The curriculum was created by NYSG Specialists and has been reviewed by environmental professionals. Now, we are now looking for feedback and review by teachers and educators throughout New York State to make this resource as impactful as possible.  Due June 11thLink

Register for the Mid-Atlantic Climate Change Education Conference by Friday, June 11 to receive a free conference Warming Stripes sticker. Join us at MACCEC to learn how educators from across the region are teaching about climate solutions, science, justice and the workforce. Over 4 afternoons (June 28 - July 1), classroom teachers, nonformal educators, and researchers will share best practices, lesson plans, and tools for engaging K-12 students and community members in climate change education and action. Presenters from across the region and country will share how they are using climate data in the classroom, integrating environmental justice into their lessons, building climate resilience in communities, researching climate change impacts, educating the public through art and cooking, and preparing the next workforce to respond to and combat climate change.

Middle and high school students are invited to register for free and spend the afternoon of June 28th learning from fellow students on climate change solutions. At the end of the afternoon, all conference attendees are invited to attend a student panel where the next generation will share why they are taking action and demanding climate change education. We are looking forward to learning from these current and future climate leaders! Middle and high school students can register for free HERE.

The Sanctuaries 360°: Explore the Blue series was launched last year to bring a collection of virtual underwater experiences to people throughout the world. These videos and lesson plans proved to be extremely popular over the last year and gave homebound students, teachers, and those seeking an escape a virtual outlet to experience our national marine sanctuaries.

In celebration of World Reef Awareness Day (June 1st) and to help raise awareness & appreciation for reefs, we've created a fun coral reef craft that uses many upcycled materials! It includes a how-to video and printable animals for a splash of learning.  We made ours two-tiered, but for a simpler craft, you can use just one layer https://livingporpoisefully.com/2021/05/21/upcycled-3d-coral-reef-craft/
You can also check out the how-to video directly on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/BVa0VnD17CY
