Novel treatment regimen shows value in frail patients with multiple myeloma
 
Multiple myeloma is a disease usually affecting older patients who are often frail, according to the International Myeloma Frailty Index. The outcome of frail patients is poor mainly because many discontinue treatment due to toxicity. To address this issue, a national team led by Sonya Zweegman, Professor of Hematology, investigated a novel treatment regimen with an expected low-toxicity profile in a prospective phase II clinical trial.

White Ribbon tour
 
The White Ribbon tour brings attention to lung cancer and raises money for research into better treatments. At the end, the White Ribbon was presented to oncological surgeon Geert Kazemier and pulmonologist Annemarie Becker-Commissaris.

European Fair Pricing Network
 
The Dutch Cancer Society decided to unite European cancer societies and research institutes to establish the European Fair Pricing Network (EFPN). EFPN aims to secure fairer prices of cancer medicines while upkeeping the innovation pipeline and timely access for patients to promising new medicines.

Tracking down hard-to-find cancer
 
Surgeon Els Nieveen van Dijkum was recently appointed professor of endocrine surgery. She is dedicated to patients with so-called neuroendocrine tumors, a rare form of cancer that is not always easy to find. Her inaugural lecture is on September 9th.

Variability within tumors predicts survival rates of patients with cancer
 
Researchers at Cancer Center Amsterdam have developed a method to measure the variability of chromosomal aberrations in tumor cells, or heterogeneity. After calculating the heterogeneity for tumors of 11,534 patients, they found that patients with a high heterogeneity have a worse prognosis. This research was published today in Nature Communications.

Cancer Center Amsterdam call 2021
 
The Cancer Center Amsterdam Call 2021 is now open for submission. One of the main goals this year is to stimulate early career researchers (<10 years post PhD) with highly innovative ideas. The proposed projects will be judged on potential and innovation and should not be ready to submit for funding elsewhere. Deadline for preproposals: June 1st, 2021.

The MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship (previously ‘Individual Fellowship’) under Horizon Europe will open mid-May. External deadline: 15 September. NWO has published the second call for proposals for science communication in the context of the Dutch Research Agenda (NWA).The call “NWA Science Communication 2021-2022” strengthens the connection between science and society by providing funding for a wide spectrum of projects. The budget available for the call is 3 million euros. Deadline: September 21th.

We provided solutions for accurate organ dose reconstruction for childhood cancer survivors treated in the 2D radiation treatment (RT) planning era, which results can be used to investigate relationships between the delivered dose to patient specific regions and the (late) adverse effects that happen to later because of radiation toxicity in childhood cancer survivors with long-term follow-up.
