1st International Conference on Moisture in Buildings (ICMB21)

We are thrilled that the programme for 1st International Conference on Moisture in Buildings (ICMB21) is now available to view online. The conference will be an online event, taking place on 28-29 June 2021.

If you’d like to attend, there is still time left to register. For more information and the programme visit: https://ukcmb.org/icmb21
CPD Course “Understanding and Managing Moisture Risks in Buildings” part of PCA and CIBSE Training portfolios

The UKCMB's two-day CPD course Understanding and Managing Moisture Risks in Buildings has been licensed to CIBSE Training and the Property Care Association. Both organisations are offering online presentations delivered by the UKCMB training team: Nicholas Heath, Valentina Marincioni and Robert Prewett. CIBSE presents the course over two consecutive days, and the PCA presents the course over four half-days - see their websites for more information.
A Risk Management Framework Integrating Energy and Moisture

Dr Marincioni and Dr Altamirano-Medina from the UKCMB, together with Dr Virginia Gori from the UCL Energy Institute, have published a risk management framework integrating energy and moisture to support the retrofit of traditional buildings. The framework has been published as a paper in Buildings and Cities, within the special collection Retrofitting at scale: accelerating capabilities for domestic buildings stocks.

The principle-based risk management framework describes the steps required for moisture risk management at the various stages of the retrofit process. The framework puts into practice the 4 Cs, the four principles of context, coherence, capacity and caution theorised in the BSi white paper on Moisture in Buildings written by Neil May and Dr Chris Sanders.

This systematic approach harmonises those principles needed to support organisations in delivering robust low-carbon retrofits and integrates pre- and post-retrofit building assessment in the process.

UKCMB’s affiliate doctoral students

We want to welcome Gulala Aziz, who has joined the UKCMB affiliate group. Gulala is currently a PhD student at the Built Environment, Engineering, and computing at Leeds Becket University. The title of her PhD project: Developing a Sustainable Management Tool for Damp Control in Residential Buildings

The research carried out by UKCMB’s affiliate doctoral students is key in the process of understanding moisture risk and safety in buildings. The work they have undertaken will help support training, guidance, and the general advice we provide to the public and inform policy, standards, and practice. Please contact us if you want to be part of this great group of doctoral researchers and our UKCMB community.

Building Envelope Research Network (BERN@UCL)
UCL has launched the Building Envelope Research Network (BERN@UCL), in which UKCMB is set to play a key role. The objective of BERN@UCL is to coordinate and promote UCL's extensive research related to building envelopes and to engage with Government, the building professions and industry about their research needs.

Dr Peter Rickaby of UKCMB is the Coordinator of BERN@UCL, and an Engagement Manager is currently being appointed.
CIBSE working group to develop a building physics guide
Dr Valentina Marincioni and Dr Peter Rickaby of UKCMB have joined a CIBSE working group to develop a building physics guide, to which they will be contributing sections on moisture. The work is at an early stage, and we will update UKCMB members as the project progresses.
