Summer Learning 2021 from the Ohio Statewide Family Engagement Center

"A mind that is stretched by new experience can never go back to its old dimensions." ~Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.

Here, at the Ohio Statewide Family Engagement Center, summer is a time for learning. As lifelong learners, our team aims to grow in our skills and knowledge; no better time for this than summer!
Summer is also a time for family. We hope your families will take time this summer to do something you love together. The things we learn from our families last our lifetimes. Whether it's stories from your childhood, the names of stars, how to tell a weed from a squash plant, or how to change the oil in your car - our families are amazing teachers.

Learning with Our Families:
|
Summer is when families have more time for learning together at home. Our team recommends the following books and podcasts to read, listen to, and discuss with your families.
- Make Your Kid a Money Genius (Even if You're Not) by Beth Koblinger (recommended by Yesenia Alvarez Padilla)
- Antiracist Baby by Ibram X Kendi: This has been a fun book to read with my one year old and it has certainly been more beneficial for me than it has been for him at this point. I love the idea of beginning these conversations as early as possible. (recommended by Patrick Cunningham)
- A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow: This novel will have you looking for magic in everyday life and is a great introduction for middle schoolers to the power of diversity and one's own culture. (recommended by Hadley Bachman)
- How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber & Elaine Mazlish (recommended by Thomas Capretta)
- Between Mom and Me by Katie Clemons: a guided mother/son journal (recommended by Beth Crawford)
- Stuff You Missed in History Class: When we ride in the car together, our family likes to pick an episode from this podcast. There are lots of topics to pick from and the hosts make every episode interesting. We learn something new from each one. (recommended by Barbara Boone)
- Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X Kendi (recommended by Kristin Meek-Hennon and Beth Crawford)
- 30 Days of Families Learning Together (recommended by Meredith Wellman)

Free Course for Early Career Educators
Foundations of Family Engagement is a free course for early career teachers, counselors, and other school-based staff to build their knowledge and skills for effective family engagement. The course will be delivered in 3 learning blocks through a flipped instructional model. For each block, participants will first individually complete an online module to build their background knowledge related to family engagement. Then, we will meet together in a synchronous online workshop session to apply our knowledge to our work in our own school communities. The process will repeat for the next two learning blocks. Share this learning opportunity with early career educators in your school or district. Hurry, space is filling fast!
