President’s Corner

By Regena Boyland

Greetings SIS Team!

Spring is definitely in the air. As the season transitions from winter, tree branches are budding, flowers are blooming and more people seem to be outdoors enjoying the nice weather. Being outside on a nice sunny day, whether taking a walk or sitting on a park bench, brings me a great deal of calmness and relaxation. There is something about being close to nature that is very peaceful. This constantly reminds me of the importance of self-care. In particular, as women, with our busy schedules, we often forget to take time out for ourselves. While we are busy in our personal lives and doing great things for our community, let’s not forget to take in those relaxing/enjoyable moments from time to time so that we can recharge and energize ourselves.

Speaking of recharging, our members have been putting a lot of energy and hard work into all of the exciting activities we have going on within our club. As you know, our Live Your Dream and Scholarship programs are underway, our Blanche Edgar/Shirley Godfrey Award Program is in full swing, and tickets for our upcoming Spring Fling Wine, Beer & Food Tasting fundraiser are now on sale.

I’d also like to give a shout-out to a couple of our members who made connections with two organizations to carry out some of our important club activities. Kudos to Susann Hadler, who connected with AcademyStay for a great Random Act of Kindness idea for March. In addition, thank you Nancy Wolford-Landers for reaching out to Umoja International Academy who is interested in implementing the Money Matters and Dream It Be It Programs in their school.

Our SIS team is growing! We recently celebrated several new club members (Jilg Douglas, Ashley Garcia, Tara Sandidge & Jennifer Roberts) and continue to attract new applicants. Welcome new SIS members!

SIS, our club turns 102 years old this month! We’re still going strong after all these years! Way to go SIS for keeping our legacy alive and kicking!! I am so grateful for all you do!

Sincerely,

Regena

Four New Members Inducted

We are so thrilled to have four new members join our club this year (and two more are on the way)!

On January 3, Ashley Garcia and Jilg Douglas were inducted. Ashley found us on a web search as she was looking for a way to get involved in the community.  Ashley is a financial planner for US Bank and when she’s not working, she’s likely to be doing something fun outdoors. Jilg has been connected to SIS for a while as she has worked with Idelle at our See’s store. They met over 40 years ago at a CPA firm and as a friend of Idelle’s, it was only a matter of time before she would join.

A month later, on February 7th, we inducted Tara Sandidge and Jennifer Roberts. Jennifer visited the club a couple of times last fall after hearing about it from a family member.  As a new Sacramentan, she’s looking forward to making friends and giving back to the community. When she’s not working with her family’s business, King Consulting, she loves to travel.  Tara also found us on a web search (we are happy that SI Sacramento seems to pop up when supporting women is mentioned). Tara is an insurance specialist and works for the state of California. She loves singing and is a member of the Sacramento Women’s Chorus.

We are so happy to welcome these four new members!

Random Acts of Kindness (RAK)

February RAK

In February, we had a wonderful event for RAK. Spearheaded by Yoli Manzo (and her friend, Sharon Boatright - a member of SI Sacramento Metro), more than 50 people gathered at Device Brewery to make Valentine’s cards for the children at Shriners Hospital.

With a goal of 200 cards, the group way exceed this goal and made 550 cards! There were plenty to distribute to children and staff. Yoli and others provided a ton of supplies and everyone put their best crafting hat on and the creativity certainly showed.

The delivery at Shriners went very well and all were touched by the gesture.

RAK for March

Susann Hadler had a great idea for our March Random Acts of Kindness.
She saw an article in the news about a new non-profit in Sacramento called AcademyStay.  She looked into it and found that AcademyStay provides (in their own words):
Our programs are designed to address the critical needs of
aged-out foster youth, helping them transition into independent adulthood. Each program is tailored to provide stability,
skill-building, and a sense of belonging.
HOUSING
A safe, fully furnished apartment is the foundation for success. AcademySTAY offers housing for youth aged 18–24, giving them a stable environment to focus on education and personal growth.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Our life skills classes prepare youth for the challenges of adulthood. From financial literacy and job readiness to academic support, we equip them with tools for independence.
MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT
We provide trauma-informed care, connecting students with mental health professionals and resources to ensure they feel supported and secure as they work toward their goals.
COMMUNITY BUILDING
Through peer connections, mentorship, and community events, we foster a sense of belonging and support that helps youth build lasting relationships and networks.

They are just opening their doors and when asked what we could do for them, they had a modest request to provide some personal items to give as a gift to each of the students.  The committee  came up with a list of personal items that we thought would be fun and practical at the same time.

Our goal is to make 25 gift bags, and we would like them to be uniform.  Please pick items off the list and have them sent to me, at my office

Live Your Dreams (LYD) Awards

Friday, March 21

Please join us on Friday, March 21 for a most special and anticipated meeting - the annual Live Your Dream Awards.  The LYD committee received 19 applications, and the committee worked together to choose several deserving young women to receive education grants.

Soroptimist's Live Your Dream Awards program is a unique education award for women who provide the primary financial support for their families. The Live Your Dream Awards give women the resources they need to improve their education, skills and employment prospects.

This meeting is always inspirational and allows us to see the direct impact that SIS has on these women’s lives. The RSVP email will be sent out the weekend before March 21st. This is also a great meeting to invite friends to attend; several or our members joined after coming to a LYD award meeting.

Member Spotlight

Donna Kistler

Back in the late 90s, “The Twins” joined SIS….do you know who they are?

Donna Kistler and Karen Kouretas were called” the twins” because they joined at the same time and were good friends. Their boss at UC Davis Medical Center, Carol Robinson, was the incoming SIS President. She took Karen and Donna out for a drink and asked for their support. They enthusiastically said YES to Carol and to SI Sacramento. Donna and Karen have been friends for over 40 years - meeting as nurses at the Med Center.  That’s how she started in SIS and more than 25 years later, she’s still here.

SIS is full of natural born leaders and Donna is no different. She started her career as a nurse, starting out in the ICU and then working in the kidney transplant unit. At the time, UCD was at the cutting edge for renal transplants, and Donna moved up into administration when she was still a pretty young RN. Since she was younger, it took longer to get promoted but because Donna was always ready to take on new challenges and responsibilities, it didn’t take long for the bigwigs to notice. All in all, she has been an RN for 46 years. She loved being a clinician but also realized that administration involved a whole new set of skills - leading the leaders  - and she enjoyed this work as well.

Donna decided it was time to retire from hospital work when she was only 53 years old, but she knew she had a lot left in her, so in the second phase of her career, she decided to try something different.  She became an Independent Hospital and Heath Care Consultant, and because she knew so many people up and down the state from her connection to various medical professional organizations, it didn’t take long for her to get really busy!  Donna worked all over the Bay Area (and even in southern California) in interim director positions. On a quick glance at her LinkedIn Profile…wow…she was pretty busy over those years. Her last gig was as Interim CEO of the Association of California Nurse Leaders and ended that in 2022 after helping to transition the new CEO. Donna loved being an Interim leader and she definitely left each place a little better off.

Retirement has not slowed Donna down. She is a board member for three different nursing boards, a proud Soroptimist member, a member of the council for her university alumni and a volunteer at her grandson’s school.

Donna was married for almost 40 years before her husband, Ray, passed away in 2023. The two of them traveled together often, so it has been a transition for her to not have her favorite companion by her side.  They were always big cruisers (close to Elite status on Princess) and in the last year, Donna has gone back to cruise life with friends and family. The next cruise starts in Vancouver and later this year, she’ll go to Quebec for an autumn cruise. A trip to London with a friend is in the works for October.

She has two sons (her son followed her into the medical field as well as his wife) and four grandchildren (ages 8 months, 6, 7 and 9) who all keep her busy. They love hanging out and traveling together. When she’s not traveling, she’s reading, helping with the grandkids and just enjoying life.

The photo below is Donna’s precious granddaughter, Emma Rae.  This sweetheart was born on the first anniversary of her dear husband’s death. A bittersweet day for all of them, but they feel Ray smiling down on them whenever little Emma Rae lights up a room.
