Office of the Chancellor Stamp

To all Staff and Faculty:

Earlier this week, University of Michigan President Santa Ono announced to the Ann Arbor campus a number of proactive budget measures to insulate that campus from adverse long-term impacts related to current and future federal funding cuts.

That announcement was in response to a stop work order for a multimillion-dollar project that UM-Ann Arbor received from a federal agency. In anticipation of possible further actions, the Ann Arbor campus has implemented hiring reviews and will examine nonessential financial commitments and capital projects to protect university finances.

As of this writing, UM-Flint has not received any notice regarding the impact of federal funding on our campus.

For many years, UM-Flint has already operated with a keen eye on all financial issues. As such, our campus has had and will continue to operate with our already-in-place manners of control, particularly regarding job postings and non-compensatory spending.

In short, UM-Flint is not planning to change its financial controls at this time. Still, we will continue monitoring this developing situation and adapting as needed.

As always, we will continue to be mindful of our use of university resources and maintain our reserves in a manner that would get us through difficult financial times, should they arise in the future.

Thank you,

Laurence B. Alexander, JD, Ph.D.
