Changing Up HSMUN for a Big Crowd!
The largest crowd in many years participated in the second semester High School Model UN session sponsored by Civitas this past Saturday. To accommodate more students, the event was held at Winifred Moore Auditorium instead of the fall venue of Browning Auditorium, both on the Webster University campus. As a former chapel, converted into its current space in 1973, Winifred Moore auditorium is stately and elegant with huge stained glass windows, cushioned seats in place of pews, and as the main theater for the St. Louis International Film Festival every November, a reliable sound system and large screen. There was plenty of room for the crowd of over 150 people in attendance on Saturday. Other changes to the event were a longer time-frame, 4 hours vs. the traditional 3, and the inclusion of fantastic student facilitators for most of the resolutions of the day. Topics of discussion included admitting Taiwan to the United Nations, tackling various global climate change challenges, addressing needs of war refugees, and working children in Samoa. Questions, comments, and amendment suggestions were plentiful and mostly friendly. A few countries were predictably a bit hostile at times (ahem--Russia, Israel, the U.S., to name a few...), proving the keen awareness of international current events and also creating laughs and applause. Caucus time produced creative compromising and strong diplomacy and the consumption of a generous amount of snacks! Overall, it was a great event for capping this school year's High School Model UN experiences through Civitas. We will be back at it in the fall! But in the meantime, if you're still wanting to discuss all that's going on in the world, including the seemingly new direction of US foreign policy, sign up for the Civitas Zoom discussion on Wed., April 2 from 7-8 pm. The signup link is in the calendar below.
A huge thank you to all delegates who completed the evaluation from Saturday's session. We are reading your comments very carefully as we begin HSMUN plans for the 2025-2026 school year.
Four delegates were randomly selected from those who submitted an evaluation to win a $15 gift card from Amazon. They were emailed to the recipients last night. The winners of the Amazon gift card drawing are:

Together with our partners at the Deliberative Democracy Lab at Stanford University, Close Up is thrilled to invite high school students to join us on the Stanford campus this July 13-19 for an incredible program opportunity.
Do you know a student with a special interest in tech policy? Are they hoping to learn and talk more about AI and its impacts? Our NextGen Roundtable: AI & Democracy Summer Institute is a once-in-a-high-school-career opportunity for youth to engage with Stanford faculty, to deliberate with their peers, and to weigh in on the future of AI regulation.
