The colors are arriving
We call it "high autumn." October ushers in the most colorful season in Sandpoint, Idaho – kind of a surprise to those who think "peak foliage" starts in September. Nope, peak colors here will come on for the next few weeks. And here are three places to experience our "peak" fall glories.
- The Pend d'Oreille Bay Trail, a two-mile stroll along the lake shoreline, goes bright yellow as the birch and cottonwoods light up. You'll likely spot waterfowl on the lake, or even eagles perched amid the leaves.
- Speaking of birds. Ducks, geese and swans are arriving in the thousands at the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge, about 45 minutes north. The refuge's auto route, trails and photo blinds offer superb viewing.
- In late October the tamarack trees turn a stunning yellow-gold before they drop their needles. There's good viewing of tamarack forests along the upper Pack River Road to Harrison Lake in the Selkirk Mountains.
The fall colors might be the main attraction, but plenty of colorful events are coming up, too. Check 'em ... and we hope to see you here!

'Tis the month for a fest
Oktoberfest features 5 craft breweries
For the second year, five local craft breweries are collaborating to combine their tasty suds with the authentic traditions of Oktoberfest in downtown Sandpoint. It's a family-friendly event abounding with Bavarian festivities including the biergarten, plenty of German food, a lederhosen contest, stein race and more activities including, of course, lots of live music. And a few blocks east, the Sandpoint Farmers Market is having its season-closing Harvest Festival. Both are Saturday, October 12.

Bringing a storm on stage
Gaelic Storm to play the Panida
It’s hard to imagine a band just coming into their own after 20 years of success, but that’s just what Gaelic Storm is doing. After two decades and over 2000 shows, this multi-national, Celtic juggernaut appeals across the genres: The country-music folks adore the storytelling, the bluegrass-heads love the instrumentals, Celtic fans love their tradition, and the rockers simply relish the passion the Storm players bring. They'll light up the Panida Theater stage October 23; it's a potential sell-out, so get tickets early.

Cello as you've never heard
Musician's 'CelloBop' combines with film
Fine cello music combines with a classic silent film for a two-track treat on October 24 at the Panida Theater. Virtuoso cellist and composer Gideon Freudmann presents a unique mini-cello concert followed by a screening of the classic silent comedy film "Sherlock, Jr." featuring Buster Keaton. This cinematic gem will be accompanied by Gideon's original soundtrack, creating a harmonious blend of sound and visual art. Gideon is renowned for his groundbreaking "CelloBop" style, fusing classical, jazz, folk, rock, blues, and funk with his amplified cello. Presented by the Pend Oreille Arts Council as part of its new Performing Arts Series season.

A classic comes to stage
'Steel Magnolias' has humor, tragedy
The young Lake Pend Oreille Repertory Theater has already produced several acclaimed plays at the Panida Theater, and the upcoming classic "Steel Magnolias" will showcase their talents. The original stage play by Robert Harling is based on his experience with his sister's death; it was later made into the famed feature film. It portrays the bond among a group of Southern women in Louisiana, with the title suggesting the female characters are "as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel." The story combines humor and comedy with a tragic storyline that is deeply revealing of the women's powerful bond. Showing the weekends of October 11-13 and 18-20.
