The following is a reply to WSPTA’s October 3rd email to Seattle PTA Leaders…
Dear President Steck,
Boycotts are inherently disruptive, and we understand the challenges that come with navigating this situation. However, we believe it is crucial that we remain focused on supporting both our members and our mission, while upholding the core values of PTA. In this spirit, we encourage you to approach this matter with an open mind, fostering understanding and collaboration, while ensuring accuracy in your communications.
As stated in our recent General Membership Meeting, SCPTSA will continue to support all PTAs in making independent decisions, as each PTA operates as its own 501(c)(3). However, the concern raised by several Seattle PTA Presidents about WSPTA’s choice of venue for the Legislative Assembly at Seattle Pacific University (SPU), due to the institution’s anti-LGBTQ policies, cannot be overlooked.
At our General Membership Meeting on September 30, 2024, members voted to boycott the event at SPU, request refunds for paid fees, and demand the release of the full DEI audit commissioned by WSPTA in 2022. This decision is grounded in WSPTA’s Resolution 2.19 on LGBTQ+ Inclusion, which upholds the right of all children and families to be safe and included in community programs.
We are committed to maintaining compliance with National PTA’s Standards of Affiliation (SOA), which ensure the integrity of the PTA brand and mission. These standards require state constituent associations to uphold transparency, financial accountability, and alignment with PTA values, including diversity, equity, and inclusion. As outlined in the SOA, WSPTA must operate according to the mission and vision of National PTA, ensuring that all events and actions reflect the organization's commitment to inclusivity and non-discrimination.
In light of this, SCPTSA requests that WSPTA release the DEI audit report commissioned in 2022. This aligns with the financial and governance transparency required by the SOA, including the timely filing of IRS Form 990, completion of financial reviews or audits, and the annual submission of governance documents. As stewards of the PTA mission, we must prioritize accountability in our financial and operational practices, as outlined in the SOA.
WSPTA’s choice of venue at SPU contradicts its own resolution on LGBTQ+ inclusion and undermines the principles of equity and justice. Additionally, SPU’s discriminatory hiring practices are not only a violation of these principles but also create legal precedents that harm our LGBTQ+ youth and members. This directly conflicts with National PTA’s commitment to creating inclusive environments where every child can thrive, as well as WSPTA’s own resolutions on youth suicide prevention and dismantling systemic racism.
Furthermore, by asking our members to attend this event, WSPTA is effectively asking them to support an institution that actively discriminates. This is not in alignment with National PTA’s Standards of Affiliation, which emphasize the importance of protecting the PTA brand, ensuring that actions and partnerships do not cause harm to the value and goodwill associated with the PTA name.
SCPTSA will continue to provide advocacy support to our members through an online event on October 26–27, offering a space free from discrimination, where advocacy for children’s rights can flourish. This event is organized in direct response to member requests and will be offered in multiple languages to ensure accessibility for all.
We call on you, President Steck, and the WSPTA board to align your actions with the resolutions and policies that reflect our shared mission of inclusivity and advocacy. The release of the DEI audit and reconsideration of the venue choice are necessary steps to ensure WSPTA’s compliance with National PTA’s Standards of Affiliation and the values of our community.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. We look forward to working together to ensure that our actions reflect our shared commitment to the well-being and success of every child.
Sincerely,
Samantha Fogg
