Thank you to everyone who brought in your books this week. We could still use more donations if you have any puzzles or books you’d like to give. All your donations help fortify Gardner’s Annual Book Swap as one of the top community events in the area. This year’s event has more community support and activities than ever, with food carts, games, tours, alpacas, competitive chili cooking, and much more. Your involvement has made this possible and we couldn't be more excited. Go here for more details.

How Can Parents Help Support Children's Mental Health?
|
|
New this year, Gardner School is partnering with Wonder Tree Developmental Psychology to share an online resource for parents in our community. ParentEd Talks, Powered by ParentMap, is a series of webinars and Q&A sessions with some of the leading experts in child development across a range of topics.
Our first talk features social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, author of “The Anxious Generation,” on Tuesday, Oct. 15. What began with a book launch, The Anxious Generation has since transformed into a three-year campaign to reclaim childhood, inviting teens, parents, schools, tech and policy leaders to take collective action — from inside their own families and homes, at school, to the halls of Congress — all across the globe.
Sign up here for the live Q&A-style webinar using promo code GARDNERSCH to attend for free. You'll also gain access to the event recording, so you can watch it anytime, anywhere. Over the course of the year, you'll have access to all these webinars and the recordings, but you'll need to register for each one. Check out the list here, and stay tuned for more opportunities to connect with other parents, teachers, and experts as we learn together!

Thank you to artists from the Battle Ground Art Alliance for coming into our Wy'East classroom to teach traditional basket weaving techniques. This learning opportunity connects with their thematic topic of westward expansion, and the hands-on work connected them more deeply with the learning!

Meet the Staff
Jared Renfro grew up in a small town near Kansas City, Missouri. He spent many a summer on the family farm, and these early days sparked his curiosity of the world around him. He obtained his Bachelors Degree in Therapeutic Recreation from the University of Missouri. During his undergraduate years he worked with young people with mental health issues. and he went back to school in 2007 to obtain a teaching degree deciding to use his lifelong curiosity of the world around him by taking a year of classes in chemistry, geology, and biology before enrolling in a Master’s of Science Teaching program at Portland State University. He spent his student teaching year in Portland Public Schools and then a year of substituting for Portland Public Schools before joining the Gardner School faculty in 2011.
Jared’s teaching style reflects his curiosity of the world. He believes that students need to explore the world around them first by asking questions about what they notice and then finding answers to those questions. He encourages them to use their strengths as they learn, and apply what they learn to their lives.
When Jared is not teaching, he enjoys designing and creating stained glass artwork. He teaches stained glass classes. He also enjoys camping, hiking, reading, various crafts, and is always looking for new ideas to bring into his classroom and share with his students.
