FROM THE ICOYC
Who is Your Club’s ICOYC Correspondent?
With the change of watch that occurs at many clubs when the seasons shift or the year ends, often dedicated members retire from long-held roles, and others move into positions of leadership. This is a great time to confirm who will serve as your club’s correspondent to the ICOYC.

This person’s role can take many forms, including:
  • Sharing the top headlines from your club’s latest newsletters.
  • Ensuring ICOYC is on your club’s press release distribution list;
  • Updating your club’s information for the ICOYC database;
  • Sharing ICOYC news with your club members;
  • Attending ICOYC regional and world forums and liaising with ICOYC leadership;
  • Answering the call when ICOYC requests news items, distributes surveys and solicits feedback on how the organization is serving your club.
Please take a moment to visit the ICOYC Directory and confirm that the club member listed is your ICOYC correspondent. If you have updated contact information, please reach out to communications@icoyc.org.

A Great Opportunity: Attending the Americas Regional Conference
SAN FRANCISCO YACHT CLUB
By Quentin Hills, Vice Commodore, San Francisco Yacht Club

It was my great pleasure to attend the ICOYC 2024 Americas Regional Conference hosted by the Royal Canadian Yacht Club in Toronto, Canada. I was honored to attend with S/C Paul Rosenlund, ICOYC Secretary. The theme of the conference was Navigating the Modern Yacht Club.

Royal Canadian YC, founded in 1852, is located on the Toronto Islands on Lake Ontario – a mere 10-minute water taxi ride from downtown Toronto. The late summer was warm and the magnificent clubhouse and grounds, looking directly at the vibrant and spectacular city of Toronto, provided a perfect venue for three days of networking, sharing of club experiences and discussion of club best practices.

Approximately 24 attendees plus partners, representing 14 yacht clubs from across North America focused on topics ranging from improving club operations to advancing the sport of sailboat racing and the activity of yachting. It was a great opportunity to share experiences, successes and challenges. It was clear we all have much in common, including retaining and attracting new members, creating a first-class member experience and being good stewards of our respective clubs over the long term. The shared experiences combined with the formal presentations were balanced and insightful.

On the second day, there was a half-day session on developing long-term strategy for clubs. This session made it very clear that the Club Benchmarking planning and strategy development we are currently undertaking at San Francisco Yacht Club is not only key to sound long-term Club stewardship, but the SFYC is well and truly on the right track.

Overall, it was a very productive three days and a great opportunity to enjoy the wonderful hospitality of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club!

A full recap of the 2024 Americas Conference with photos and reference materials will be shared in the October ICOYC Currents.
