SEPTEMBER 2024 NEWSLETTER
A Word from our Chief Executive Officer, Mark A. Smith
As I sit here listening to the TC Junior band rehearse for the ninth consecutive year, I cannot help but look from the past to the present and imagine and look forward to the future. As our old friend Norma Ryan from Brownsville said to me last year, “We can’t hang our hat on the past; we must move forward with a bigger and better vision.”

Looking forward, the MVAA has a remarkably busy, bright, and eventful year producing the new “EARS” music instruction program, the new Legends mural on Peter J Daley Cultural Center, and the upcoming 2024 showcase weekend on November 2nd and 3rd. We cannot help but appreciate the past, look at the present and dream about the future. Many thanks to our students, donors, families, and corporate sponsors for enabling us to move in the future, and what will the future hold? We must stay tuned and see how far the Mon Valley Academy for the Arts will move into the future. Thank you, everyone; we will see you on November 2 and 3. For info, contact MVAA @ 724-565-1687 or

Student of the Month: Olden P., a Charleroi Area Student
In May 2024, 6-year-old Olden P. embarked on his drumming journey by taking private lessons at the MVAA Corporate Office in Charleroi, PA. With support from his parents, Olden quickly advanced from the initial "Mama Dada" exercises to his first Haskell Harr Drum Method Book #1.

His instructor notes that Olden is always well-prepared and enthusiastic when he arrives for his lessons, adding, “He hasn’t had to repeat any lessons and progresses to more challenging material each week.”

Each session is both fun and productive. Keep an eye on Olden – this young drummer is on a (drum) roll!
MVAA Receives President's Crystal Award

Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA) is proud to announce that it has been honored with the President's Crystal Award, a prestigious award presented annually by the Washington County Community Foundation (WCCF) to a small but improving charity. The award includes a $10,000 grant, which the MVAA will use for its new EARS program.

“Receiving the President's Crystal Award is a tremendous honor for the MVAA,” said Annette Buffer, President of MVAA. “This award is a testament that our young nonprofit is on the right track as we strive to provide quality programming, increase our impact in the community, and meet industry best practices regarding fiscal responsibility. The MVAA is deeply grateful to the WCCF and will use the grant for our new “Empower a Rising Star” (EARS) music scholarship program.

Mon Valley Academy for the Arts' (MVAA) new initiative, "Empower a Rising Star (EARS)," aims to provide music lessons to deserving students in grades 4-11. This program seeks the support of individuals, organizations, and businesses willing to sponsor music lessons for young, aspiring musicians.

MVAA's mission of providing affordable, high-quality instruction on musical instruments and hosting diverse community performance groups has resonated deeply within the region. The EQT/MVAA Free Summer Concert Series and the Power of Music Free Summer Concert Series are just two examples of the organization’s commitment to bringing the arts to the public in an inclusive, community-driven way.

MVAA Announces "EARS" Sponsorship Program

“Empower a Rising Star (EARS)” is a program that provides music lessons to deserving students in grades 4-11. We’re calling on individuals, organizations, and businesses to partner with us by sponsoring music lessons for young, aspiring musicians.

For just $250, you can sponsor 10 music lesson sessions for a student, helping to nurture their talent and open doors to opportunities they might not otherwise have. The program kicks off in the first week of October 2024, with sponsorships accepted on a rolling basis.

Once all sponsorships are secured, we will tally the funds and distribute scholarships to current and new students. Priority will be given to those who demonstrate financial need, ensuring that your generosity reaches those who need it most. Sponsors can also support more than one student, with each additional sponsorship costing $250 per student.

“We are incredibly excited to launch the ‘Empower a Rising Star’ initiative,” said Annette Buffer, President of MVAA. “This program embodies our mission to make music education accessible to all children, regardless of their financial circumstances. By sponsoring a student, you are not just funding lessons but investing in their future, dreams, and potential.”

To sponsor a “rising star” or for more information, fill out our Sponsorship Form, call 724-561-5616, or email info@monvalleyacademyforthearts.org.

Gretchen Little (top left), Jillian Little (top right), Camille Middletown (middle), Evan Lee (bottom left), and Thomas Mylan (bottom right) have been awarded the first-ever EARS (Empowering a Rising Star) scholarships. As talented and dedicated young musicians, all these students have demonstrated exceptional commitment to their musical development, making them well-deserving recipients of this prestigious award. The EARS scholarship program was established to support and encourage the next generation of artists, and we are excited to see how these students continue to grow and contribute to the arts community. Congratulations to all!

Breaking news! At press time, four more deserving students have also received EARS scholarships.

Large Mural Honoring Music Legends to Be Unveiled

Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA) is excited to announce a significant public art installation honoring our region’s rich musical history. A large mural featuring the likenesses of local music legends Sam Bill, Vinnie Colaiuta, Scott Elias, John Gresh, Cheryl Hardwick, Jeff Lashway, Danny Leoni, Jerry Leoni, Mark Smith, and Van Ross Redding will be painted on the side of the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center (MVAA South), located at 119 Brownsville Avenue. This exciting project is part of Rivers of Steel’s Creative Leadership Program, completed with funding support from The Benedum Foundation, Pennsylvania Council for the Arts’ Creative Communities Project, and an Appalachian Regional Commission POWER grant. Founded on the principles of heritage development, community partnership, and a reverence for the region’s natural and shared resources, Rivers of Steel strengthens the economic and cultural fabric of western Pennsylvania by fostering dynamic initiatives and transformative experiences. The Creative Leadership Program is a three-year intensive community development incubator for communities through the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area.

The mural will celebrate these influential figures whose contributions have shaped the region's music scene. The unveiling ceremony will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at MVAA South. It will feature live performances from MVAA’s talented student performance groups, including members from VoiceZ on Fire and the Regimental Fife & Drum Unit.

This family-friendly event is free and open to the public. Attendees will enjoy light refreshments, live music, and an opportunity to celebrate the cultural legacy of our region’s extraordinary musicians. The mural is a tribute to their lasting impact on the community and the music world.

Annette Buffer, MVAA President, shared her enthusiasm for the event:

“We are excited to work with Rivers of Steel to honor these Brownsville legends. This mural will preserve their legacy and inspire future generations of musicians. I encourage everyone in the community to join us for this special unveiling and celebrate the talent from our town.”

MVAA is grateful to Rivers of Steel for their dedication to the arts and for making this project possible. Their support reflects a commitment to promoting and preserving the Mon Valley's cultural heritage.

MVAA in Focus: September Snapshots

The Regimental Fife & Drum Unit (RFD) made two notable appearances in September, performing on September 14 at The Allegheny Trail and again on September 28 at the historic Greenock Log House. Both performances brought a rich, vibrant sound and a piece of history to the community, showcasing traditional fife and drum music. "We are thrilled to see our Regimental Fife & Drum Unit sharing their talent and passion with audiences at these significant locations," said MVAA President Annette Buffer. "Their performances connect us to our roots and remind us of the power of music in preserving our heritage."
