An Excellent Turnout for the Country Draft!

Group 2, the overall winner of trivia this year, were quite proud of their final score
The Country Draft at Webster University this past Saturday was the best attendance yet for a Civitas Country Draft with 70 students from over 30 different school groups! The whole morning was energetic and fun and included a close trivia game contest. The first place team earned 27 points out of 30 possible and three teams tied for second place with 25 points. We had to use the tie-breaker guess score to determine the runner-up team. Small prizes were given to delegates in both groups. We also had two guest speakers to kick off the event. Professor Gina Jensen welcomed students to the Webster University campus and even offered a scholarship to any Model UN student who attends Webster University if they reach out to her. You can contact Civitas to get in touch with Professor Jensen and learn more. Story Kummer, a senior at John Burroughs, talked about the important work of the League of Women Voters and shared how students can get involved in the LWV and in the voting process, even if you are not 18. (Tomorrow is the deadline to register to vote for the November 5 election, so spread the word!)

Next steps to prepare for your Model UN session:
  • Choose the country from your school's list that you will represent this year. More than one student can represent the same country from one school/group, but each country only gets one vote.
  • Begin researching your country.
  • Sign up for the actual Model UN session once you know your country. Every student, even if sharing a country, needs to sign up. Click here to reach the Model UN signup form. It is the same form for all 3 sessions.
  • Write a resolution on a global topic of your choice. We can only accept two resolutions per school, so consider collaborating. Resolutions are due via email to Stephanie by midnight before your session.
  • Sign up to attend our Model UN Workshop on Saturday, October 26 from 10:00 am until noon at Crossroads College Preparatory School. The workshop is optional, but strongly encouraged, especially if you are new to the Civitas Model UN program. Click here to reach the Oct. 26 workshop sign up form.

Whatever you want to talk about -- Sat., Nov. 16

We're talking a lot about 'us' now as we are in the middle of campaign season. Under normal circumstances, when an election is held on Nov. 5, as it is this year, we know by Nov. 6 who the winners were. This year we run the risk of not knowing, even several weeks later. We invite you to come to Crossroads on Saturday, Nov. 16 to not only discuss where we are politically then, but also what's going on in your personal lives, how you're dealing with the possible stress of upcoming holidays and perhaps college admissions. Is peer pressure at school an issue? What about bullying? Is climate change affecting your life, or is that someone else's problem, or no one's? What's the cell phone policy at your school? Is it a good one?

Come join us at Crossroads that morning and we'll talk about whatever is on your mind as well as those of others.

Student Deliberations, as we approach Election Day
DELIBERATION LEADING THE PEOPLE

With just over a month left until Election Day, there’s no more important time to help young people learn and practice the skills of thoughtful deliberation. In an effort to build respect among Americans with differing opinions, Close Up, the Deliberative Democracy Lab at Stanford University, and Generation Lab are hosting free, online, national deliberations for students this fall!

Please spread the word and give young people the chance to learn from an array of perspectives and form their own considered opinions on pressing policy issues!

Civitas has had excellent collaboration with the Close Up Foundation. We are 'civil deliberations' partners.
