New Archival Research on Muslim Medical Students at University of Toronto

Update

Dr. Roshan A. Jahangeer, the inaugural Postdoctoral Fellow in Islamophobia in Health Professions Education at Temerty Faculty of Medicine and the Wilson Centre from 2022-2023, completed a research study titled “The conditional inclusion of Muslims in medicine: intersectional experiences of Muslim medical students at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine from 1887-1964” under the supervision of Drs. Umberin Najeeb and Cynthia Whitehead. This work is now published in the Canadian Medical Education Journal and is the first study of its kind to examine the historical experiences of Muslim medical students with diverse identities at a Canadian medical school.

Welcoming Dr. Kashmala Qasim

Update

On November 4, 2024, Dr. Kashmala Qasim will be joining the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and the Wilson Centre as the 2024-25 Postdoctoral Fellow in Islamophobia in Health Professions Education, under the supervision of Drs. Umberin Najeeb and Cynthia Whitehead. In this role, she will conduct research and develop and deliver educational resources to address Islamophobia within medical health education and practice. Dr. Qasim recently earned her PhD in History, Theory, and Critical Psychology from York University, where she examined how Qur'anic learning influences Muslim women's perceptions of empowerment, well-being, and identity using a Standpoint Feminist framework.

1. Invitation to Participate in a Study for Physicians Living with Disability

Update

Canadian physicians are invited to participate in the study  “Motivation and Barriers to Participation in a Community of Practice for Physicians Living with Disability,” which seeks those living with disabilities and chronic conditions to take part in studying  motivations and barriers to participation in a national community of practice (CoP).

2. Working Group on Civil Discourse

Update

The Working on Group on Civil Discourse invites all faculty, librarians, staff and students to participate in institution-wide consultations on civil discourse at U of T.

Online consultation for internal stakeholder groups of faculty and librarians, staff, and students is now open, and in-person and virtual meetings will be held for community members on all three campuses.

3. Get Talking! Event Series Discussing Healthcare Challenges

Starting Tues Oct 15

From the MHSc in Translational Research Program hosted by Dr. Edyta Marcon, Get Talking! is an in-person discussion series focused on the most challenging issues facing healthcare today including equitable access to care, legislation, funding, delivery, and innovation. It is intended to showcase multiple perspectives and create a forum for a constructive, respectful discussion.

4. Masculinity and Mental Health of Muslim Men of Colour: Diaspora and Intersectionality of Canadian Youth

Collaborating with the York Centre for Asian Research, the Centre for South Asian Critical Humanities will be hosting a talk and book launch of Mustahid Husain’s book “Redefining Manhood: Navigating Mental Health Among Young Muslim Men.” Husain is a postdoctoral fellow in Anthropology at the University of Toronto.

5. 2SLGBTQ+ Discrimination and Harassment in the Workplace

This session will explore how homophobic and transphobic discrimination and harassment can manifest in the workplace. Participants will learn about the relevant policy landscape for managing discrimination and harassment. Building on this, participants will explore how to foster a changing and inclusive workplace culture for 2SLGBTQ+ employees and communities.

6. 14th Annual Ori Rotstein Lecture in Translational Research

The Institute of Medical Science invites you to the 14th Annual Ori Rotstein Lecture in Translational Research happening in person at the Li Ka Shing Auditorium with Keynote Speaker Dr. Christopher Mushquash. This year’s theme is Indigenous Health Research, and aims to present current research and gaps being explored in this field.

7. Mentors for COS RASI (Research Application Support Initiative)

Mentors are currently being recruited for RASI (Research Application Support Initiative), an initiative part of the Community of Support program (COS) designed to help students from underrepresented communities at various stages of research interest or experience get to the next level in their research productivity.

8. Recognizing and Addressing Race, Place of Origin & Creed-Based Discrimination in our Work Environment

Discrimination based on race, place of origin and creed can manifest in various ways within the workplace. This interactive workshop aims to deepen participants’ understanding of how both race, place of origin and creed-based discrimination can occur in our work environments.
