Romans 13:8-10, “Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. The commandments, ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not covet,’ and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore, love is the fulfillment of the law.”
This past week in our adult classes we spent the entire time teaching and learning about Romans chapter 13. The premise of the teaching was in regard to submitting to those in authority.
Specifically, we looked at how we as Christians are to respond, react, give honor and respect to those in positions of authority. However, we also learned how Paul addressed the topic of love, love for another.
Right now, we are in the throws of a very contentious presidential campaign season. It seems that no matter where we turn, we are seeing a campaign sign, hearing a campaign message, reading information, or seeing ads and commercials online or TV in regard to this election; it is simply everywhere.
With all of this, people have developed very strong opinions in regard to who should be the next president of the United States. With these opinions, a lot of people have changed how they treat one another.
For some, if you are not on the same page with them in regard to their opinion, the gloves are off and a verbal or libelous fight ensues. Unfortunately, this election has brought out the worst in a lot of people, specifically in how they love and respect one another.
The second greatest commandment that Christ gave us is to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Paul specially addressed this when he quoted Christ’s words from Matthew chapter 22. This election should not divide us or cause us to fight amongst ourselves. We are to respect and honor one another. We are to listen and discuss things in the manner Christ taught us, the manner of love.
So be in prayer these next few weeks as we head closer and closer to the polls. Pray for one another. Pray and lift each other up. Just because we all may not vote the same, doesn’t change the fact that we are all brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ, and we all deserve to be loved.
See you all on Sunday!
