Canada Raises an Additional $2 Billion with Successful Re-opening of 10-Year Green Bond
The Government of Canada successfully re-opened its second Canadian-dollar-denominated green bond, raising an additional $2 billion. This is part of Canada’s commitment to regular green bond issuances, supporting the country’s transition to a greener, more sustainable economy.
Key Highlights:
- $2 Billion Raised: The re-opening of this 10-year green bond adds to Canada’s commitment to financing environmentally responsible projects.
- Strong Demand: Environmentally and socially responsible investors drove demand, with 53% of buyers focused on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) investments, resulting in an order book exceeding $3.8 billion.
- Pioneering Clean Nuclear Investments: Canada remains a global leader, being the first sovereign to issue green bonds that include certain nuclear energy expenditures under its updated Green Bond Framework.
Green bond projects funded by these issuances will help grow Canada’s economy, create good-paying jobs, and accelerate projects like green infrastructure and nature conservation. Backed by Canada’s AAA credit rating, green bonds also provide high-quality ESG assets to the investment market, setting a sovereign benchmark for sustainable finance.
Learn More about this offering and Canada’s leadership in sustainable finance by downloading the PDF pamphlet or contacting a financial advisor.
This re-opening is the first of two smaller green bond transactions planned for fiscal year 2024-25, as outlined in Budget 2024. Stay tuned for the next issuance!

In his latest commentary, Senior Economist Andrew DiCapua emphasizes the importance of September’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) reading of 1.6%, calling it a crucial turning point in Canada’s economic outlook.

🍁 Strong Job Market Growth: Employment Surpasses Expectations
47,000 New Jobs Added in September
For the first time in eight months, Canada’s unemployment rate dropped to 6.5% in September, with an employment increase of 47,000 jobs, far exceeding market expectations of 15,000.
Despite this positive shift, the demand from job seekers continues to outpace the supply of jobs from employers. Senior Research Director Marwa Abdou notes in her latest commentary that this imbalance suggests that "something has to give" as labor market pressures persist.
