ABOUT US
At Saint Louis Sudbury School, life is learning and learning is life. We value autonomy, dignity, and respect!
One of the core elements of Saint Louis Sudbury School is School Meeting. Led by a student, School Meeting happens three times a week and offers students, staff, and volunteers opportunities to make announcements about upcoming events or activities, to bring up discussion items (often about rules, policies, field trips, classes, and chores), and to propose motions (often about spending School Meeting money on supplies, games, guest teacher fees, and field trip and party plans).
We recently had an exciting School Meeting discussion and motion that involved making School Meeting attendance required on Wednesdays. It was a close vote, involved a recount (some students were raising both of their hands for the vote), lots of questions, persuasion, negotiation, and some laughter! All students, staff, and regular volunteers have a vote at School Meeting if they choose to use it.
Saint Louis Sudbury School believes that humans are born curious and learn best when we initiate our own learning. We offer fully Self-Directed Education for students age 5-18. With no coercive curriculum, homework, grades, or tests, Saint Louis Sudbury School students have the freedom, space, and time to pursue their interests, discover who they are (and get better at it!), and develop meaningful communication, critical thinking, and decision making skills. All of this freedom to learn and to be is bounded by a democratically run structure where youth and adults have equal say in how the school is run, including developing, questioning, and maintaining its many rules and policies.
Interested in mid-year enrollment? Schedule a Zoom conversation or tour of our school. Learn more about our admissions process here.

RECENT HAPPENINGS
Saint Louis Sudbury School students have had an active beginning to the school year! We've been making slime, baking cookies, discovering ceramics, reconnecting with friends, figuring out and creating boundaries with people and how to communicate them, learning how to be responsible for your own mess, reading graphic novels, playing lots of Minecraft, going on field trips to parks and stores, running committee meetings, debating and creating new rules, dancing, making art, playing chess, sharing a love for history, talking about everything and anything, and more!
We were excited to have Rob and Josh of the BGG Foundation visit our school. The BGG Foundation (which stands for Bruh Got Game) is dedicated to empowering socioeconomically disadvantaged youth by utilizing gaming to lead them to educational and job opportunities. Sudbury students and staff loved talking with Rob and Josh about the video game industry, their incredible foundation, and the world of self-directed education!

SUDBURY THOUGHTS
A Saint Louis Sudbury School parent reflected on her son's time with the Sudbury community recently. She shared, "Today he's spending this school day outside with Saint Louis Sudbury School running, laughing, learning how to do community and conflict resolution while he climbs trees and pets dogs, and yes, probably plays more Minecraft than I'd like. He is more alive than he was and that is an utter triumph."
