WUMUNS: A Lovely Weekend to Spend with Friends

Part of the Civitas group at WUMUNS XVII
The weather was divine and the company even better this past weekend at the Washington University Model United Nations Symposium. Civitas students were on 12 different committees, including the UN Press Corps, UNESCO, SCOTUS, and others. Breaks, meals, and a Saturday night social were perfect networking opportunities between the nearly 300 high school students from Florida, Ohio, Massachusetts, Wyoming and other states. The vibe was fun and challenging, and a nice break from the stress of this American election season. Read some comments from Civitas participants:
"At WUMUNS I participated in my first crisis committee. I learned valuable lessons on participation and speaking in committee. I made many friends and had fun with different scandals presented in committee. My favorite part was my directive that got passed, "Operation Fein," detailing Travis Scott's performance at the 1904 World's Fair!"--Katie G., Metro
"I loved WUMUNS! The people there are the best, and it was great getting to connect with friends who live across the country,"--Augustus F., Borgia
"I've never done a big MUN event, so I was nervous at the beginning but it was fun to speak in front of lots of people, which I don't usually have a chance to do. It also gave me an opportunity to make friends from around the country,"--Yeonuk (Hank), Chaminade
"The world of competitive and casual Model UN are completely different. People have preferences on what they like more or less, but either way, without experiencing both worlds you can't say which one you prefer. WUMUNS allowed me to get that experience, to see the other world of Model UN that I haven't experienced before. Being right here in STL, WUMUNS was a great opportunity for me and many other students to experience and I'm truly grateful for the opportunity," Nischal M., Metro
"It was an incredible experience. I thoroughly enjoyed thinking about complex topics such as how to combat a plague, playing war games against Sparta, and collaborating with people all over the US and the world! 10/10," Apurva G., Marquette
"Wash U Model UN creates a unique environment for teenagers around the world to come together and solve real world issues or ideas. This conference was so different from any other high school conference I've been to and I highly recommend it," Emily E., Eureka
"I thought WUMUNS was a great experience. I think it's a good way to show people what Model UN is all about, especially with their novice committee," Gabe E., Metro

A HSMUN Prep Session this Saturday with a Special Guest!

Attention all Model UN delegates attending Session A, B, or C High School Model UN this fall! We strongly encourage delegates to sign up to attend our Model UN Workshop this Saturday, October 26 from 10:00 am until noon at Crossroads College Preparatory School (MAP).  During our first half hour together we will have a guest speaker joining us via Zoom from Berlin, Germany. Christiny Miller is a Civitas alum and 2009 graduate of Webster Groves High School. Her work since has focused on international relations and development. She spent two years in the Peace Corps in Ukraine (2015-2016), right after the initial Russian invasion. She is now a Policy Consultant at the ZOE Institute for Future-fit Economies. Recently Christiny was a delegate to the 2024 United Nations #SummerofFuture. On Saturday, she will be talking about economic and social development, the advancement of human rights, and building international coalitions. Much of her work has focused on the European Union. She will also answer questions from delegates who attend on Saturday. She might give some of you a resolution topic idea!

Following Christiny's talk, we will review what to expect at a Civitas High School Model UN session, cover the resolution writing process, and help delegates with resolution drafts. We'll also have plenty of snacks and drinks! Join us!
Click here to reach the Oct. 26 workshop sign up form.

What should delegates do next (other than attending the workshop this Saturday!) to prepare for Model UN? Hopefully you know what country you will be representing for your Model UN session by now. At this time, learning about your country is the most important task. The Civitas website has excellent resources to help you get started. Click here to reach the Resources page of our website. Scroll down to Civitas Materials and you'll see #3 and #4 to help begin the country research process. You will be speaking and voting from the perspective of your country, so the more you know, the better you can role-play. It's also a good idea to keep up with global current events leading up to your session.

The next step of preparation is to write a resolution. That's optional, but strongly encouraged, especially if you enjoy speaking at Model UN sessions. Again, there are a wealth of resources to help you get started, including an archive of past resolutions, on the Civitas website. Since we can only accept two resolutions per school per session, you might want to collaborate with others in your school group and co-sponsor a resolution.

Whatever you want to talk about -- Sat., Nov. 16

We're talking a lot about 'us' now as we are in the middle of campaign season. Under normal circumstances, when an election is held on Nov. 5, as it is this year, we know by Nov. 6 who the winners were. This year we run the risk of not knowing, even several weeks later. We invite you to come to Crossroads on Saturday, Nov. 16 to not only discuss where we are politically then, but also what's going on in your personal lives, how you're dealing with the possible stress of upcoming holidays and perhaps college admissions. Is peer pressure at school an issue? What about bullying? Is climate change affecting your life, or is that someone else's problem, or no one's? What's the cell phone policy at your school? Is it a good one?

Come join us at Crossroads that morning and we'll talk about whatever is on your mind as well as those of others. Click here to sign up!
Six Statewide Ballot Issues on Nov. 5 Ballot
The League of Women Voters of Missouri Education Fund is providing Information on Six Statewide Issues on the Nov. 5 Ballot. The issues are:
  1. Amendment 2 -- Legalize Sports Gambling
  2. Amendment 3 -- Reproductive Freedom
  3. Amendment 5 -- Lake of the Ozarks Casino
  4. Amendment 6 -- Proposed by by the General Assembly -- Court Fees
  5. Amendment 7 -- Block Ranked Choice Voting and Other Alternative Election Systems
  6. Prop A -- Missourians for Healthy Families & Fair Wages
We want to advise you that the "official titles" of these measures can sometimes be misleading.
Student Deliberations, as we approach Election Day
DELIBERATION LEADING THE PEOPLE

With just over a month left until Election Day, there’s no more important time to help young people learn and practice the skills of thoughtful deliberation. In an effort to build respect among Americans with differing opinions, Close Up, the Deliberative Democracy Lab at Stanford University, and Generation Lab are hosting free, online, national deliberations for students this fall!

Please spread the word and give young people the chance to learn from an array of perspectives and form their own considered opinions on pressing policy issues!

Civitas has had excellent collaboration with the Close Up Foundation. We are 'civil deliberations' partners.
