Ahoy!

When we first proposed Scientists Ashore on E/V Nautilus in 2010, connecting scientists with high-resolution real-time video and data ship to shore from anywhere in the world sounded more like science fiction than reality. Since then, telepresence has revolutionized how we conduct ocean exploration.

This week, I participated in the 2024 National Ocean Exploration Forum, workshopping the best path forward to moving ocean exploration even more toward teleoperations. We worked in groups discussing four key components of teleoperations: interoperability, AI/ML and situational awareness, remote operational task analysis, and cost benefits. The results will be shared in the coming months.

Increasing teleoperations for mapping, exploring, and characterizing the ocean can not only increase efficiency and reduce the cost per area mapped or explored, it can open the field to a much broader community of practice. From those who physically cannot sail to communities that have not historically participated, telepresence continues to be an essential tool in broadening the community of ocean explorers.

This month, the first cohort of our deep ocean training program, Accessing the Deep, moved into the mentoring phase, pairing each participant with deep ocean experts to continue to shape their research proposals. We're incredibly excited to see what plans emerge for their communities!
