LIFE IN THE LONG SHADOW OF FACTORY FARMS

Giorgio is a long-time resident of an area where he coexists with an intensive cow farm, a chicken farm, and a biogas plant. He always has to wear a mask when the odours infest the area. He suffers extreme nausea and loss of consciousness because of the exposure.  Photo: Selene Magnolia Gatti

The We Animals Photojournalism Fellowship has provided vital support to Senior Fellow Selene Magnolia Gatti in her project, Long Shadow, which examines the impact of intensive farming on the health and well-being of nearby communities. Selene's work, recently published in the Guardian, seeks to make industrial farming viscerally relevant to wider audiences.

Selene says that throughout this project, she made a lot of mistakes and learned a lot.

“My suggestion to animal photojournalists is to think outside the box, to constantly hear many sides of a story with curiosity. Understand the angles specific media have an interest in, and back up your reportage with well-researched, unbiased journalistic hooks. Most importantly, do not give up! ”

HOPE FOR CARRIAGE HORSES

In Indonesia and across the globe, carriage horses endure significant hardships such as extreme neglect, inadequate living conditions, and gruelling work hours that their bodies aren’t built to sustain.

Photojournalist Resha Juhari documented their plight, along with the efforts of those striving to rescue these horses and reform the systems that allow their mistreatment.

Whether you’re celebrating the holidays, a birthday, or another special occasion, a We Animals tribute gift is a meaningful way to honour a loved one and advocate for animals at the same time. We can notify the recipient by email or mail, whichever you prefer.

You can also support We Animals by asking family and friends to make donations in your honour. We Animals supporters Alanna and Mathieu have raised an incredible $7,000 for animal photojournalism by asking their wedding guests to donate in lieu of gifts. Thank you so much, Alanna & Mathieu.

PHOTO OF THE MONTH: BIRD HELL

Photographer Aaron Gekoski visited the notorious Thanh Hoa bird market and said that the level of brutality was hard to witness. He points out that often, the story behind the photographs is as interesting as the images themselves.

“At one point during this assignment, our fixer turned around and ran towards us, screaming and pulling at his hair. He was pursued by a swarm of murder hornets, a notoriously aggressive animal. They followed us to the car and even continued stinging us as we locked ourselves inside. The pain was unreal. We drove ourselves, sweating and moaning, to the local hospital. The experience shook us, but the pain we experienced was negligible compared to what Vietnam’s animals go through.”

Our animal photojournalists are on the front lines, facing all manner of threats in order to get important images and underreported stories out into the world.
