Our Mission Statement:
"To be a community that shares the joy of God's Love"

From Fr. Mack

“To be a community that shares the Joy of God’s love”

I am sure that like many of the churches in our diocese, there are some of us at St. Patrick’s who are pleased with this week’s election results, just as there are some of us struggling to find any sort of silver lining at all. So, I was grateful that on Wednesday morning, at our 10am Holy Eucharist, our Gospel for the feast of William Temple was from John chapter 1:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it.

I have always loved the prologue to John’s Gospel, because it tells us that Jesus himself is God’s mission statement in the flesh, and that God’s mission will never be overtaken.  Love, justice, and kindness will prevail.

In times like this, in the midst of all the fears, anguish, and division, it is easy to be paralyzed by despair, or conversely, to begin frenetically racing about confronting every single challenge.  Instead, I invite us all to take a breath. Be gentle to yourself. Reach out to those who may be feeling vulnerable and afraid. And finally, focus on our mission at St. Patrick’s: “to be a community that shares the Joy of God’s love.”

I am not saying that we need to “get over” or ignore the real pain and fear some of us are feeling.  If anyone needs to talk, know that I am here and eager to listen, because we need to continue loving, comforting, and encouraging each other.  But I never want us to lose focus on the mission God has given this congregation to do.  No matter how you voted, this is something we can all do together. And though I have been your priest for less than a month, it is plain to me that St. Patrick’s has so many gifts to share with a world that is so very hungry to know the joy of God’s love.

A. Just Happened

November 3rd was a special day in our parish as we celebrated All Souls Day/Dia de los Muertos with a festive ofrenda honoring our loved ones who have passed.

Parishioners brought photos of their loved ones to place on the ofrenda in the narthex, and special prayers were said during our Sunday service. Many agreed this is a welcome new tradition for our parish, and a special “thank you” to Stephanie Chapralis McCaffrey and Margaret Merchat for the creation of our ofrenda this year.

Preaching on the story of Jesus raising Lazarus, Fr. Mack invited us to “Come Forth!” and leave all that pulls us down to remember that we are a people of hope, called to be the light of love of a troubled world.

B. Happening Now

Big thanks to Jerry Daw and Ron Keith for “making straight the way of the Lord” and plainly marking a rough patch in our walkway. As the days darken, we don’t want any hidden hazards!

C. About to Happen

This Sunday, November 10, we will be collecting a purse to help Mark Kratz with extraordinary expenses associated with his mother’s death: air fare, time off work, etc, and to show our love at a moment of bottomless grief. You may make your check in any amount payable to St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church. Put “Discretionary Fund” on the memo line.

On November 17 at the regular service, Beth Lewis and Rev. Carol Luther will be received into the Order of the Daughters of the King, a women’s order dedicated to prayer, evangelism and service.

Our anthem this Sunday is “Faith Hope and Love,” a lilting setting of words from the Roman Missal paired with the music of Pachelbel. Faith, Hope, and Love are known as the “theological virtues,” and represent the gifts God asks us to share. Our communion hymn 593, “Lord make us servants of your peace” is a setting of a beautiful and well-known prayer attributed to St. Francis:

Lord, make us instruments of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let us sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is discord, union;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
Grant that we may not so much
seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that
we are born to eternal life. Amen.

Although this prayer beautifully mirrors the faith of St. Francis, it is found nowhere in his writings. It first appeared in 1912 in France, and was widely prayed during the First and Second World Wars.

Upcoming Worship Service

In Person and on Zoom

Dear All,

Our next distribution will be Monday, Nov 11 (Veteran's Day!)  Pam, Lauri/Tim and Carolyn W are scheduled volunteers.

With the time change, our distribution will go into the dark for the next many months.  Between the parking lot lights and the hanging lights Arturo has, we'll have sufficient lighting.  Hopefully, we'll also need rain boots!

Bring wrapped candy to St Pat's at a 2nd or 4th Monday distribution or on a Sunday morning.  Sunday, Dec 15, I will ask for volunteers at the Coffee Hour to pack paper bags as holiday gifts for our children.

Thank you for continue making a tangible difference the the lives of so many.

Time to go through your closets! Bring your own extra coats and jackets and place in the bin in the Narthex before Saturday, 11/23.

I will take them to Stevenson Hall and hang on a rack from which our guests can choose a coat on 11/23.  Redwood Gospel will appreciate your assistance for its members as we start the Fall and Winter season!

P.S. if anyone would like to assist me in hanging up the coats and jackets give me a call — 415-309-3484, Sallie Wood, Chair
