NOVEMBER 2024 NEWSLETTER
A Word from our Chief Executive Officer, Mark A. Smith
Only one day from today, on Saturday, November 2, and Sunday, November 3, the MVAA will be celebrating the ninth anniversary of what the late Pete Daley and Joe Campus only dreamed about—an active cultural arts organization in the heart of Western Pennsylvania and a nonprofit business cultivating the talent and resources of our Mon Valley region while meeting and exceeding the rich heritage that both gentlemen experienced in their youth.

Since its inception, the Mon Valley Academy for the Arts has been dedicated to enriching the youth and adults with much-needed concerts, educational classes, and a safe, secure environment to develop talents and relationships. With the committed Board of Directors, local businesses, and supportive families, the upcoming “Legends Showcase” November 3rd dinner dance will continue the year-end showcase of the 17-piece TC Jr. Stage Band, who will open up for national blues artist Mr. Billy Price. Tickets are available at 724-561-5616.

On Saturday, November 2, the MVAA will celebrate and dedicate the recently painted “Legends” mural on the street side of the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center in the downtown Brownsville business district. Festivities start at 3 p.m., with the Reg’t Fife and Drum unit and the “VoiceZ on Fire” show choir performing before the service with local dignitaries. The Saturday event is free and open to the public.

With overwhelming response and support from the Tri-County area, the MVAA is currently planning for our 10th Anniversary celebration in 2025. Stay tuned and stay connected!
Large Mural Honoring Music Legends to Be Unveiled

Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA) is excited to announce a significant public art installation honoring our region’s rich musical history. A large mural featuring the likenesses of local music legends Sam Bill, Vinnie Colaiuta, Scott Elias, John Gresh, Cheryl Hardwick, Jeff Lashway, Danny Leoni, Jerry Leoni, Mark Smith, and Van Ross Redding was painted on the side of the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center (MVAA South), located at 119 Brownsville Avenue. This exciting project is part of Rivers of Steel’s Creative Leadership Program, completed with funding support from The Benedum Foundation, Pennsylvania Council for the Arts’ Creative Communities Project, and an Appalachian Regional Commission POWER grant. Founded on the principles of heritage development, community partnership, and a reverence for the region’s natural and shared resources, Rivers of Steel strengthens the economic and cultural fabric of western Pennsylvania by fostering dynamic initiatives and transformative experiences. The Creative Leadership Program is a three-year intensive community development incubator for communities through the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area.

Throughout 2024, participants collaborated closely with Rivers of Steel staff members Ashley Kyber and Jon Engel, engaging in various events and public art initiatives for Brownsville’s downtown area. Muralist Atalie Gagnet was chosen to lead the mural project, working alongside local youth, artists, and residents interested in learning about large-scale mural design and installation. Known for her ability to create impactful public art, Atalie draws on her fine arts background and extensive painting experience to craft murals that enliven and connect communities. For this project, she partnered with residents to design a mural that is both accessible and deeply reflective of Brownsville’s unique heritage.

The mural celebrates these influential figures whose contributions have shaped the region's music scene. The unveiling ceremony will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at MVAA South. It will feature live performances from MVAA’s talented student performance groups, including members from VoiceZ on Fire and the Regimental Fife & Drum Unit.

This family-friendly event is free and open to the public. Attendees will enjoy light refreshments, live music, and an opportunity to celebrate the cultural legacy of our region’s extraordinary musicians. The mural is a tribute to their lasting impact on the community and the music world.

Annette Buffer, MVAA President, shared her enthusiasm for the event:

“We are excited to work with Rivers of Steel to honor these Brownsville legends. This mural will preserve their legacy and inspire future generations of musicians. I encourage everyone in the community to join us for this special unveiling and celebrate the talent from our town.”

MVAA is grateful to Rivers of Steel for their dedication to the arts and for making this project possible. Their support reflects a commitment to promoting and preserving the Mon Valley's cultural heritage.

For more information, please contact Annette Buffer at 724-561-5616 or info@monvalleyacademyforthearts.org.

Empower a Rising Stars (EARS) Fall Scholarships

The Empower a Rising Star (EARS) Scholarship Program by Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA) supports young musicians in the Mon Valley area, allowing talented youth to advance their musical skills and education. Through this initiative, students of all ages and backgrounds receive the resources they need to excel in the performing arts. This program embodies MVAA’s commitment to fostering the next generation of musical talent, offering scholarships to ensure that financial barriers do not hinder a young person’s potential.

For Fall/Winter 2024, the EARS program was made possible through the generous contributions of Highway Appliance and Heidi Kavanaugh, whose support significantly broadened the reach of the scholarship initiative. Additionally, the SPHS Monessen Communities That Care sponsored ten deserving EARS students, providing them with essential resources for growth and education in the arts. These collaborations are vital to the program’s ongoing success and help ensure students from diverse backgrounds can pursue their dreams.

The program was further supported by a generous $10,000 award from the Washington County Community Foundation. These contributions allowed MVAA to expand its offerings, ensuring access to quality music education for 35 deserving scholarship applicants, each receiving ten (10) free music lessons on the instrument of their choice. While several of the scholarship recipients were current MVAA students, many new students also enrolled in classes at one of our three locations—Charleroi, Brownsville, and Monessen—as part of the EARS initiative.

The EARS Scholarship Program continues to inspire and empower youth, nurturing talent that will contribute to the community’s cultural richness for years. MVAA is seeking sponsors for the upcoming Winter/Spring session of the Empower a Rising Star (EARS) Scholarship Program. This transformative initiative provides talented young musicians the resources and opportunities to develop their skills, build confidence, and pursue a passion for the arts. Sponsorships are $250 per student, a contribution that covers vital expenses, including instrument rental, lesson fees, and performance opportunities.

By becoming a sponsor, you or your organization will play a key role in empowering young talent and enriching the Mon Valley community with the arts. Sponsors will also receive recognition in MVAA’s promotional materials and at our performances, showcasing their commitment to supporting the arts and education.

To sponsor a “rising star” or for more information, fill out our Sponsorship Form, call 724-561-5616, or email info@monvalleyacademyforthearts.org.

Your sponsorship can make a lasting impact on a young musician’s journey. Join us in supporting the next generation of artists through the Empower a Rising Star Scholarship Program.

MVAA in Focus: October Snapshots

Three music legends, Vincent Peter Colaiuta, Jerry Leoni, and Mark A. Smith, recently reunited at the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center in Brownsville, PA, in front of a mural celebrating their contributions to music. Joining them were MVAA President Annette Buffer, one of the Sam Bill Legacy Band directors and longtime friend of Vincent “Vinnie” Colaiuta Bobby Menear, and MVAA Affiliate Board Member Dwaine Kromer, as well as community members eager to witness the gathering of these celebrated artists. Their presence paid homage to their roots and shared legacy in the Mon Valley music scene.

Vincent Peter Colaiuta, an American drummer known for his work with Frank Zappa, Joni Mitchell, and Sting, is revered for his technical mastery. Jerry Leoni, a Republic, PA native and drummer for The Lettermen, has toured with artists like Marie Osmond and Dolly Parton. Mark A. Smith, founder and CEO of MVAA, has over 50 years of dedication to preserving and promoting Mon Valley’s musical heritage. Together, these artists embody the rich musical history that the Mon Valley Academy for the Arts strives to honor and pass on to future generations.

The mural, created by Ohio artist Atalie Gagnet, was funded by Rivers of Steel and coordinated by Ashley Kyber. This project celebrates the lives of notable Brownsville musicians who achieved national and international acclaim. Developed with support from the Rivers of Steel Creative Leadership Program, the mural involved extensive community collaboration throughout 2024, engaging local youth, artists, and residents in Brownsville’s cultural renewal.

MVAA President Annette Buffer recently received a check for the Empower a Rising Star (EARS) scholarship program from Nettie Dellapenna, who represented the Brownsville Rotary. This generous contribution will support MVAA's ongoing commitment to providing musical education opportunities for young talents in the community.

Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA) CEO Mark Smith and esteemed piano and brass instructor Carla DellaPenna recently visited Monessen Elementary School to host a special assembly, introducing students to the transformative power of music. During the event, Smith and DellaPenna shared insights into how music education fosters creativity, discipline, and confidence, inspiring young minds to explore their own musical interests. Engaging students with lively demonstrations and interactive segments, they highlighted music’s ability to connect people, empower personal growth, and cultivate a lifelong appreciation for the arts. This event underscored MVAA’s commitment to positively impacting youth through accessible and impactful music programs.

This October, Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA) invited home and cyber school students to join its Halloween STEM Series for an engaging and educational experience. Designed for grades K-3 (age 5+), this program welcomed children to explore science, technology, engineering, and math in a fun, Halloween-themed atmosphere.

Each day brought a new, exciting STEM-based theme to help children learn through hands-on activities. Participants also enjoyed a fun and festive Halloween celebration on the final day, complete with crafts, games, and treats!

The Regimental Fife & Drum Unit recently showcased their spirited marching in the Bentleyville Halloween Parade, captivating audiences with their traditional rhythms and historical flair.

Their appearance followed an energetic performance by Take 5 Brass, whose lively tunes set a vibrant tone for the parade. Together, the two groups brought a dynamic musical experience to the Bentleyville community, celebrating the season with both modern and historic sounds.
