This November, TLC proudly joins the nation in recognizing National Family Caregivers Month, celebrating the theme “I Care.” At TLC, we are a community of caring, providing vital support and resources to families caring for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Through advocacy, education, and direct support, we aim to uplift both caregivers and those they care for.
Family caregivers face many challenges, and National Family Caregivers Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness, celebrate their dedication, and offer much-needed support.
Navigating resources and support for loved ones with IDD can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. Vijaya V. Tangella, TLC’s Psychologist and Therapy Services Manager, shares her advice for families seeking support:
Take care of yourself first, whether it is your physical health or mental health, so you can be there for your family members.
Research and ask for help. There are many organizations such as the Autism Society of NC and The Arc that provide valuable resources. Connect with parent advocates who can share their experiences and join support groups to find a community.
Be patient with support organizations. These groups are here to help, but they often receive a high volume of requests. You may need to join waitlists for services, but staying engaged and working with them can ensure you receive assistance as soon as possible.
By staying proactive and connected, you can access the support you need for your family.
