Certify to Succeed
A person stands atop a mountain holding a flag in silhouette.
Austin Community College and The University of Louisiana at Lafayette have focused on QM Course Reviews for Certification as a primary driver of their quality assurance efforts. As a result, they’ve seen notable improvements in learner success, faculty satisfaction, campus-wide engagement with the process, and more. Read how they leverage certification to achieve their institutional goals.

Why Third-Party Course Reviews Matter
Course reviews help you ensure a course meets QM standards — and that can lead to better outcomes for learners. But the benefits can be even more far-reaching for multiple stakeholders:
  • Faculty and staff: Third-party review gives you more resources and support for delivering quality online learning.
  • Academic leaders: Online programs validated by a third party increase credibility with parents and students.
  • Institutions: Third-party review provides more consistent quality across offerings and reduces the burden on internal resources.

Advocating for third-party review of your courses and programs at your institution can benefit learners and educators alike. Share the video with your colleagues to spread the word!
Build Quality Into Assessments
Quick Tip
When it comes time to assess your learners, there are two major categories of assessments to choose from: formative and summative. Formative assessments check learner progress toward achievement of the learning objectives and incorporate feedback so learners can improve. Summative assessments evaluate learner achievement, such as a final exam. Summative assessments do not usually include feedback to the learner other than a grade.

Incorporating opportunities for learners to check their progress through formative assessments supports their learning journey and enables them to correct misconceptions and clarify their thinking before a summative assessment. Feedback may be in the form of pre-written responses based on answer choices in a quiz, written or audio feedback from the instructor, or from other learners.

Summative assessments generally measure learner achievement of the course learning objectives. Take a moment to revisit course learning objectives to ensure the summative assessment planned for the end of the term aligns with the outcomes expected for learners.

(Supported by QM Specific Review Standard 3.5: The types and timing of assessments provide learners with multiple opportunities to track their learning progress with timely feedback.)
