ASTLEY HALL NURSING HOME
Christmas Newsletter 2024
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Preparations are well underway here (we like to start early!) so diaries at the ready for all our festive events. But first, an Autumn update...

We are thrilled to have won at The Great British (West Midlands) Care Awards 2024, with Chris Breakwell winning the Cook/Chef Award and Lisa Whitehouse a finalist in the Care Worker Category. Chris now goes through to the National Awards where we wish his every success.

In Chris's words "With 25 years of culinary experience in hotels and restaurants, I have honed my skills in creating dining experiences that delight guests. Recently transitionally into the care sector, I find immense fulfilment in providing nutritious, enjoyable meals that cater to the unique needs of residents. My commitment to quality and passion for cooking drive me to continuously innovate and adapt menus."

Chris and Lisa had a fabulous night celebrating at the Awards Ceremony with all our other Heritage Manor finalists and winners.

Our residents are in for a treat this Christmas! We are imagining now the Christmas lunch and festive goodies Chris is going to be whipping up with our catering team!
Residents have been outside in recent weeks making the most of any sunny spells and planning the bulb planting for 2025.

One of our residents is a very keen gardener and enjoyed planting some Christmas roses in our raised beds.

We have also had fun visits from some new four-legged friends.
We had a fabulous afternoon of entertainment with Jeanette who sang for residents. Some of our residents danced along with our senior carer Kaz. We have also had sing-alongs with one of our favourite entertainers Kim.

We got some Christmas gift and crafting inspiration on a trip with residents to Cooks Garden Centre. Residents loved seeing their Winter Wonderland.
It is always heart warming to see friendships form when new residents join our Astley family. Two of our ladies got to know each other better over a ladies lunch with some fizz, to make the occasion that bit more special.

Also lovely are those intergenerational friendships and thank you to the students from Worcester School for visiting to chat and play games with residents. The gifts they brought were very appreciated. And we had another wonderful visit from the Debutots for puppet fun and story telling.
November and December events and activities

We have a weekly diary which includes regular activities such as our Friday sing-alongs,  film club, book club, gardening club, baking, salon and pampering time, Church services, art and crafts, sensory and art therapy, fitness sessions and one to one time.

Panto Day! It will be guess the character as our staffing team are dressing up for the day. Who will be Cinderella, Buttons or Widow Twanky! It's sure to be lots of fun "oh yes it is!"

We have all our regular favourite entertainers visiting through November and December, plus a new singing duo called Glam Sparrow.

The Wye Valley Falconry team are bringing their feathered friends in to visit us. Date TBC.

Bartholomew School Choir are coming in on 9th December for carolling and mince pies.

Activities focus around our Heritage Manor ethos:

"You don’t stop having fun when you get old…..
You get old when you stop having fun"

The above is a snapshot of activities planned. For a full calendar of events, please contact our Lifestyle and Well-being team: AH-Lifestyle@heritagemanor.co.uk
Heritage Manor is ending the year on a high, receiving 10 awards at The Great British Care Awards 2024. For a second year, we have been highly commended in the Care Employer Category and other individual members of staff were also regional finalists or winners in their categories. Wonderful recognition of our hard work and dedication to providing excellent care.

“Firstly, a huge congratulations to our many winners at The Great British Care Awards 2024, from Best Chef to Best Care Newcomer, along with all of our Finalists. Very pleasing to see a lot of hard work being rewarded.

The recent Government budget was a huge blow to the care sector. Once again there was no planned support for the sector in the Chancellors speech and no recognition of the need to invest in social care. The National Care Association have said: “The promise of £600 million via the Local Authority route will make little impact to the current £8.4 billion black hole in the social care budgets. The reality is that when this is divided into the children, younger adults and older people parts of the sector, it will make a very small ripple….. It is really important to note that for each staff member employed earning more than £416 per week, the cost of employing them will now increase by £615 per annum.”

I am afraid that we will be seeing another significant increase to our costs in April, and I fear that some care operators will now struggle to continue."

Simon Patient, Managing Director of Heritage Manor
In response to the budget, Nadra Ahmed CBE and Ian Turner OBE, Executive Co-Chairs of National Care Association said:
We are open for admissions of new residents. This can be long stay or respite care to recuperate after time in hospital or a fall, to regain confidence and that zest for life. Check out our virtual tour.
