Revival & Thanksgiving S‌unday

“Thankfulness and Gratitude”

Hebrews 12:18-29

The Season of Advent will start on S‌unday, D‌ecember 1. We will be starting a new sermon series called “Gift Exchange”.

SERIES OVERVIEW

Life hands us difficult experiences that weigh us down: despair, anxiety, sorrow, darkness, and feelings of meaninglessness. In the midst of all this, God holds out precious and life-giving gifts – hope, peace, joy, love, light, and purpose. This Advent season, as we prepare for gift exchanges with friends and family, we will reflect on the gifts given to us by the greatest giver of all and how we can receive and embrace those gifts even in the most difficult of times.

S‌unday, D‌ecember 1

“Despair for Hope”

Psalm 121:1-8

In life, we go through dark valleys that can lead us into despair. In such times, God gives the gift of hope in God’s love and protection.

S‌unday, D‌ecember 8

“Anxiety for Peace”

John 14:27

In the midst of troubling times, Jesus holds out the gift of peace. The peace Jesus gives is one that we cannot find in other things in this world.

S‌unday, D‌ecember 15

“Sorrow for Joy”

Psalm 30

When we experience sorrow, we can turn to God, trusting that joy will come again as a freely given gift.

S‌unday, D‌ecember 23

“Fear for Love”

1 John 4:7-19

Fear can lead us into hating the people that God created. But fear loses its power when we receive the gift of love. We are made complete in love.

Tuesday, D‌ecember 24

Christmas Eve Candlelight Service

“Darkness for Light”

Isaiah 9:2-7

Christ gives us the gift of light in the darkest moments of our lives. His light will guide and lead us into abundant life.

S‌unday, D‌ecember 30

“Meaninglessness for Purpose”

Jeremiah 29:11

Through our lives, we sometimes feel lost, not knowing who we are and where we are heading. God finds us in these places and gives us the gift of purpose for our lives.

Be a Blessing,

Pastor Scott

Thanksgiving - Some History

The following is some perspective about the origin and religious roots of Thanksgiving. Often, we associate the Pilgrims with the tradition of Thanksgiving in America, but Thanksgiving as we know it today did not start until much later in America’s history, and it took a woman and two U. S. Presidents to create this uniquely American holiday.

Worship Through Giving

We are thankful for your faithful support. It is only through your generous giving that we are able to maintain our ability to cover expenses and share God’s love via our church ministries. You may continue giving in-person during the S‌unday morning worship service, by sending your offering check directly to the church, or by using the church online giving feature found in the footer of the church website. If so inspired, you may make an online donation now by clicking HERE.

Prayer Ministry

Please keep the following people in your prayers ...

  • Family of Louise Dutcher (aunt of Anita’s son-in-law, Rich) – at her passing. Rich and Anita’s daughter, Linda were her care givers. Please pray for all involved.

  • Guy Raymond – preparing for shoulder implants to relieve nerve pain. A 3-day trial test for effectiveness will start on 11‌/21. If good, both shoulders will be done sometime in December.

  • Virginia Swagger ( Christine’s cousin) – in hospital with heart issues.

  • Michael – (Deb Wankel’s son) – prayers that as one door has closed, another one will open soon.

  • Sly Fryc (Michelle’s neighbor) – receiving final cancer treatment.

  • Theresa Slover –recovering from thyroid surgery and has 3 radiation treatments scheduled for November 19, 20, and 21.

  • John Delany (close friend of Guy’s grandson) – his cancer has spread and is back in the hospital.

  • Prayers for Anna May (Rose Mary’s sister) & Bessie Stout (Rose Mary’s aunt)

  • Continued prayer for home-bound church members: Jean Iannacone; Dottie Weeks, Donna Ridge

NOTE: Please let Pastor Scott know of any additions, removals, or status updates to this prayer list. Please place a completed prayer request card in the offering if you wish for the prayer request to appear in this list. Prayer requests will roll off the list after 4weeks unless updated or renewed.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Our Prayer Shawl Ministry is a year-round mission activity. Shawls are made by members & friends of our congregation. The shawls are given to people in need of comfort and as a reminder that they are in our thoughts and prayers. The person receiving a shawl does not have to be a member of our church. We share our shawls just as we share our prayers.

If you are aware of anyone who would appreciate a shawl, please give the information to Anita Chichester or Pastor Scott. Click HERE for more information & instructions for making prayer shawls.

Food Pantry Ministry

Next distribution is N‌ovember 25

The DeBows Food Pantry is open on the 2nd & 4th Mon‌day each month, 6‌-8pm. DeBows uses an "Appointment Only" system to distribute the food. To make an appointment, call 848-373-8844.

Please note: participants need to call for an appointment by 5‌p‌m on the S‌aturday prior to the scheduled food pantry day. This gives the Food Pantry volunteers time to prepare the food for distribution. "Thank You" for your cooperation.

NOTE: The Food Pantry Ministry serves up to 46 families (~135 people) every two weeks. We are extremely appreciative of the volunteers that make our Food Pantry possible and we welcome anyone interested in getting involved. Please contact Pastor Scott if you need further information or would like to explore ways to help with the Food Pantry ministry.

Grocery Shopping Cards

Every S‌unday, you have the opportunity to purchase grocery store shopping cards for either ShopRite or Stop & Shop. You may see Sue Hayward to purchase the shopping cards.

Music Ministry

DeBows is blessed with talented people who love to praise God and newcomers are always welcome to join our music ministry. Please contact Grayce by email at music@debowsumc.org for any questions or to discuss opportunities to participate in our music ministry.

Chime Choir

Rehearses Su‌nday morning 8:‌30 to 8:‌45 A‌M and rings the introit to worship on Su‌nday morning, except on Revival Su‌nday. New members are always welcome. Ability to sight read music and prior experience not necessary. Ability to be present and have fun very important!

Praise Band

Rehearses Tuesday nights at 6:‌‌30 P‌M and plays a five-song set once a month for Revival Sunday, usually the last Sunday of the month. All instruments welcome.

NOTE: More information about the DeBows music ministry can be viewed HERE. Modification or cancellation of specific dates will be communicated by Grayce via email. Please check email for any cancellations before coming out for rehearsal.

DeBows in Mission

Let us not become weary of doing good. ~ Galatians 6:9

DeBows is committed to extending God’s love beyond our own sanctuary and to meet the needs of our neighbors. While our flagship mission, the Food Pantry, happens every month, other outreach activities happen at various times during the year.

Below are the mission activities for N‌ovember.

*** Operation Christmas Child

“Thank You” — Our congregation filled 12 shoe boxes for this mission activity. They were dropped off at a regional distribution location on November 18 and from there they will make their way around the world.

*** On M‌‌onday, N‌‌ovember 25, DeBows will conduct its annual Thanksgiving Food Pantry distribution. Meal kits containing the makings for a complete T‌‌hanksgiving dinner will be distributed on this day to people in our community.

*** Holiday Gift Drive

Each y‌ear, DeBows UMC supports The Children's Home Society of New Jersey by buying gifts for at risk children. These gifts may be the only ones these children will receive during the holiday season. This year, members of the congregation have bought gifts for 8 children. All gifts need to be brought to the church, unwrapped, by S‌unday, D‌ecember 8.

As always, your faithful support of our church ministries is greatly appreciated. —- THANK YOU
