SSHRC Insight Development Grant Applicants
The SSHRC IDG application is now OPEN!
Please know that the Policy on Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern (STRAC) will apply to this funding opportunity. Grant applications that involve conducting research and related activities that aim to advance a sensitive technology research area will not be funded if any of the researchers involved in activities supported by the grant are affiliated with, or in receipt of funding or in-kind support from, a university, research institute or laboratory connected to military, national defence or state security entities that could pose a risk to Canada's national security. In the application form, the applicant must indicate whether research activities funded by this grant will advance any of the areas in the Sensitive Technology Research Areas (STRAs) List. For more information, read the Tri-agency guidance for this policy.
If you are planning to apply for a SSHRC IDG on February 3rd, please note the following deadlines:
January 13 - optional feedback deadline. If you wish feedback from Yvonne, submit your word documents or PDF of your entire application to her by this date.
January 27 - mandatory internal deadline. If you do not submit your application by this deadline, we cannot guarantee submission of your application to SSHRC.

New tool from the library now available - Open Access Fee Finder
The MRU Library is excited to announce OA Fee Finder, a tool designed to help MRU researchers easily find journals offering APC waivers or discounts through our publisher agreements.

Faculty Mobility for Partnership Building Program
EduCanada is helping operate the Faculty Mobility for Partnership Building Program. It provides opportunities for Canadian faculty to do short-term research and teach in Latin America and the Caribbean. The goal of the platform is for Canadian faculty members to share their expertise, collaborate on innovative research, and foster meaningful connections in Latin America and the Caribbean. The program is offered through Global Affairs Canada and is currently accepting applications from Canadian institutions on behalf of eligible candidates until November 19.
Affinity Group for Racialized & Indigenous Researchers
ORSCE, in collaboration with OEDIA, will be offering a monthly, virtual meeting space for IBPOC researchers, starting Fall 2024. The Affinity Group for Racialized & Indigenous Researchers (AGRIR) aims to create a safe, community space that fosters cross-divisional collaboration around the lived experience of self-identified IBPOC researchers at Mount Royal University. The next meeting will be on Thursday, November 28, from 12– 1pm. Please register here if interested.

Centre for Community Disaster Research November Event
Join the Centre for Community Disaster Research in the Ideas Lounge on November 25 for two talks on decolonization and the climate crisis. The first talk is titled "Rethinking Climate Change from and Within Racialized Youth-Led Climate Actions: A Case Study from the City of Calgary." The second talk is with Dr. Jean Kayira from the State University of New York. Dr. Kayira's talk is titled "Decolonizing the Climate Crisis Through Indigenous Land-Based Learning and Action in Kasungu National Park, Malawi."

December 5: SSHRC Knowledge Synthesis Grant
The theme being explored in this year's Knowledge Synthesis Grant is Envisioning Governance Systems that work. The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council has partnered with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) to put forward this international call for project proposals. This is part of SSHRC's Imagining Canada's Future Initiative. The Knowledge Synthesis Grant can fund up to $1.4 million. This funding is split between two streams. Stream 1 is for applicants affiliated with eligible Canadian institutions, with up to 20 grants that will be funded. Stream 2 is for international collaborations between two applicants, one based in Canada, the other in the UK. Up to 27 projects may be funded through this stream.

December 8: SSHRC Partnership Engage Grants
Partnership Engage Grants are expected to respond to the objectives of the Insight program and the Connection program. These grants provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision-making at a single partner organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sector. The small-scale, stakeholder-driven partnerships supported through Partnership Engage Grants are meant to respond to immediate needs and time constraints facing organizations in non-academic sectors. In addressing an organization-specific need, challenge and/or opportunity, these partnerships let non-academic organizations and postsecondary researchers access each other’s unique knowledge, expertise and capabilities on topics of mutual interest.

December 20: Ralph McGinn Postdoctoral Fellowships (WorkSafe BC)
Applications due to funder: January 3, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. PST
Open to recent doctoral graduates (must have completed their PhD within the last four years) holding a postdoctoral position at a Canadian university or research institution.
- Designed to foster the development of OHS and work disability research in B.C. and Canada through supporting doctoral graduates who are training for careers as academic researchers.
Amount/Duration: $50,000; up to 2 years
December 20: Exploratory Research (WorkSafe BC)
Applications due to funder: January 3, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. PST
Open to academic researchers based in (or formally affiliated with) a Canadian university or a Canadian research institution.
- Supports exploration of occupational health and safety and work disability challenges through a new lens, bringing together non-traditional disciplines and interdisciplinary teams. These grants are for high-risk/high-reward research that investigate new areas of scientific inquiry and challenge current paradigms.
Amount/Duration: $125,000; up to 2 years.
January 25: SSHRC Connection Grants
These grants provide support for workshops, colloquiums, conferences, forums, summer institutes, or other events or outreach activities geared toward short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives. These events and activities represent opportunities to exchange knowledge and to engage on research issues of value to those participating. Events and outreach activities funded by a Connection Grant may often serve as a first step toward more comprehensive and longer-term projects.
Amount / Duration: $7,000 - $25,000 (events); $7,000 - $50,000 (outreach); up to 1 year

January 27: SSHRC Insight Development Grants
Insight Development Grants (IDG) support research in its initial stages. The grants enable the development of new research questions, as well as experimentation with new methods, theoretical approaches and/or ideas. Proposed projects can involve, but are not limited to, case studies, pilot initiatives, or critical analyses of existing research. Funding is available for two distinct categories of scholars: Emerging scholars who will develop new research questions and/or approaches; Established scholars who will explore new research questions and/or approaches that are distinct from the applicant’s previous/ongoing research.

February 13: SSHRC Research on Research Joint Initiative
Research on research, also known as metaresearch, is the application of applying rigorous research methods and analysis to the practice of research itself. This joint initiative is operated by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and Michael Smith Health Research BC. The goal of the joint initiative is to strengthen capacity for metaresearch in Canada and bring Canadian perspectives on research to the international stage. Topics that are found in metaresearch generally and that will be funded by this initiative include but are not limited to: researching talent and professional development in a research context, researching how research funding is allocated, research integrity, researching research infrastructure, improving research dissemination output, understanding research impact, and understanding the impacts of AI on the research ecosystem.
Amount/duration: up to $200,000; 3 years

November 22: RISE-Globalink Research Internship
MITACS is offering an international research opportunity in partnership with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The RISE-Globalink Research Internship (RISE-GRI) offers undergraduate students at Canadian universities the chance to undertake summer research at eligible German institutions.
Successful candidates participate in three-month research projects supervised by Ph.D. students in Germany.
- Open to full-time undergraduates in biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, earth sciences, or engineering (or a closely related field) who have completed at least two years of a four -or five- year program. Students in Quebec enrolled in a three-year undergraduate degree must have completed at least one year of their university program
- Students must apply through the RISE application portal
Amount/Duration: $6,000 (for travel and accommodation); 3 months, projects must start between May 15 and July 15, 2025
January 14: SSHRC Storyteller Challenge
SSHRC’s Storytellers Challenge asks postsecondary students to show Canadians, in up to three minutes or 300 words, how social sciences and humanities research is affecting our lives, our world and our future for the better. Speak about a great SSHRC-funded project happening at your postsecondary institution. Your story must be compelling, creative and clear. Submit original work featuring SSHRC-funded research carried out at the institution at which you are enrolled at the time of submission.

- Supports small-scale, shop-floor research projects that lead to the development of practical knowledge and solutions that can be implemented in the workplace. These projects build on existing knowledge and technologies and apply them in innovative ways.

- Dedicated to research that may lead to novel tools and technology that can be used in workplaces to improve health and safety or work disability. Dr. Ranjan Datta was selected for the City of Calgary's Anti-Racism Action Committee. Additionally, Dr. Datta was selected for the UN Environment Programme's seventh Global Environment Outlook (GEO-7) initiative. This opportunity will allow Datta to contribute meaningful insights on the environmental impacts of the global pandemic, recent disasters, and conflicts.
